The past couple of seasons have been tumultuous when it comes to denim: wide-leg, cropped, frayed, patchworked, spliced, high-waisted… It’s enough to mess with even the most fashionable of brains. But, finally, here is some clarity – at least for now. Favored by everyone from the perennially chic Caroline de Maigret (left) to stylish siblings Cecilie and Amalie Moosgaard (center), classic straight-leg cuts are the style to be seen in. Sacrificing elastane in favor of these rigid styles might sound sartorially risky, but once you find your perfect fit, you’ll realize that these leg-lengthening, throwback styles are incredibly flattering. Our top tips? Forgo low-rise styles for mid- or high-waisted shapes, and opt for a close fit around your bottom and thighs to ensure the perfect slim fit on the leg – if you go too loose on the top, you’ll end up with a baggier boyfriend shape. As for length, a slight crop is the most covetable cut – it avoids bunching around the ankle.
One of the greatest virtues of this cut is its versatility. To save you suffering from choice paralysis, we asked three of the best denim designers – with inimitable personal style of their own – how to get maximum mileage from straight-leg jeans…
Straight-leg jeans in a mid-blue wash teamed with chic flats and a classic trench coat make for the perfect uniform. Come evening, simply slip on a form-fitting ribbed top and add a prim top-handle bag; you’ll be ready for wherever the night takes you.”Elin KlingCreative Director and co-founder, Totême
My go-to combination is a black turtleneck bodysuit or a featherweight cashmere sweater, worn with ankle boots and a skinny belt. If it’s warm out, you can’t go wrong with a classic white blouse; undo a few more buttons when the sun goes down.”Catherine HolsteinCreative Director, Khaite
My current go-to jean is our straight-leg Benefit style in white. I love wearing them with a white T-shirt, a camel tuxedo jacket and an oversized overcoat. After dark, I’ll usually opt for black jeans paired with a simple structured top, and finish my outfit with statement earrings and trophy sandals.”Karen PhelpsCreative Director, Goldsign
