The fashion team’s most wanted: SS19 bags

Fendi SS19

From buzzy new brands to iconic ‘it’ bags, sporty logos and modern mock croc, these are the new-season bags PORTER’s fashion team are obsessing over

Jennifer Dickinson, Digital Editorial Director

“I like my bags to be small but perfectly formed, which in my case means no shouty logo, a crossbody option, and enough luxe details to make it – and me – feel special. Saint Laurent’s Datcha ticks all my boxes: the lizard-effect finish elevates my off-duty denim and chimes beautifully with office-appropriate beige, brown, khaki and even black separates, adding an element of texture and polish. Size-wise, I can easily fit my essentials inside, but it’s small enough that I forget it entirely once it’s slung over my shoulder, plus the toggle closure adds a design detail without shouting ‘branded’. Bag perfection.”

“I have been on the hunt for a new tote bag, one which marries form with function in a super-chic way, and I’ve found it in The Row’s Flat Hobo. It’s big enough to put some gym kit in, or even a few things for a weekend getaway – the clean lines and elegant design disguise the fact that I may be toting around a lot of clothing, shoes and beauty products.”

“As someone who has to resist the urge to carry everything but the kitchen sink on my morning commute, I’m definitely not a mini-bag kind of girl. Enter Riccardo Tisci’s sleek new Horseferry bag to satisfy my sartorial and practical needs. I also love its nod to ’90s nostalgia with the short shoulder strap and new logo (designed in collaboration with Peter Saville). I’ll pair it with oversized tailoring for work and straight-leg jeans at the weekend.”

“I’m a devout minimalist, so the super-elegant emerging label Chylak instantly caught my eye. Launched by Proenza Schouler alumna Zofia Chylak four years ago, the Polish label has become one of fashion’s most buzzed-about brands, known for its chic silhouettes, epic waiting lists and heavy-weight fan club (which includes Edie Campbell and Alexa Chung). I’ve fallen for the adorably named, crescent-shaped Croissant style, which can be slung across the body. I’ll wear it with beige knits and toffee-colored tailoring.”

“I’ve always had an enduring love affair with the ’70s, so just had to add Chloé’s C bag to my accessory stockpile. This version in croc-effect brown leather is defined by and named after the gold ‘C’ hardware, which I like to think also refers to my own name! I’ll be pairing my uptown bag with more low-key pieces: denim, white tees and shirts, and loosely tailored pants.”

Emma Sells, Digital Fashion Editor

“I love tote bags and this one from Balenciaga satisfies all my requirements – leather, sturdy, practical, timeless – as well as being printed with the house’s graphic logo, which gives it a modern, cool slant. Its real selling point, though, is the size, as it’s big enough to carry all my essentials but small enough that I won’t be able to overfill it so much that it weighs me down.”

“The Saint Laurent crossbody Lou bag is the ultimate desk-to-dinner companion. Its understated design will elevate anything from jeans and a T-shirt to an LBD with strappy heels.”

Megan Logue, Fashion Features Writer

“My style is quite laid-back (read: a lot of denim and basically all black everything), but when it comes to accessories I like to indulge my inner magpie. A statement bag is the perfect way to add a playful edge to the classic pieces I keep on rotation, and you don’t get much more statement than Prada’s new Sidonie bag – the baguette shape is the perfect nod to this season’s ’90s trend.”

Sabina Khan, Shopping Assistant

“I’ve never been big on statement accessories, I usually like them to be understated and practical, so Medea’s minimalist bags are the latest addition to my wish list. The neutral palette of black, white and tan goes with pretty much anything in my closet, from cargo pants and a T-shirt to slip dresses and barely-there sandals. I’m also really into the doubled-up bag trend at the moment and these come in different sizes so I can wear them separately or together depending on where I’m going.”

Naomi Barling, Digital Fashion Assistant

“Fendi’s classic Mon Trésor bucket bag is a no-brainer. Big enough to fit all my daily essentials and make a style statement, I’ll wear it as a crossbody with oversized tailoring layered under a leather trench and a chunky flat boot.”
