How To Nail ’90s Supermodel Style

From the runway to the red carpet, and plenty of excellent airport outfits in between, the ’90s continue to influence the way we dress with era-defining supermodels as our ultimate muses. Here, we break down their fail-safe style formulas and how to replicate them now

Fashion

While many models have followed in their footsteps, it was the original ‘Big Five’ – Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford and Tatjana Patitz – who ushered in the era of the supermodel. They dominated the runways – walking for the hottest designers (Versace, Alaïa, Oscar de la Renta, Calvin Klein), alongside the likes of Shalom Harlow and Claudia Schiffer (and, eventually, Kate Moss) – appeared on billboards, in major ad campaigns and famously lip-synched the lyrics in George Michael’s Freedom! ’90 music video – with an encore at the fall/winter 1991 Versace show finale.

But it wasn’t just their chameleonic beauty and larger-than-life personalities that made the supers a household name. Their style did, too. They invented the model-off-duty uniform replicated by every generation since (see Hailey Bieber, Kendall Jenner and Crawford’s daughter, Kaia Gerber, for the modern-day equivalent) and approached red-carpet dressing in much the same way – with confidence, ease and a whole lot of fun.

With a new exhibition, The 90s: Art and Fashion, curated by industry veteran Edward Enninful OBE – opening at London’s Tate Modern next month, the ’90s supermodels’ influence remains stronger than ever. Here, we look back on four style lessons we can learn from the decade’s ultimate muses.

’90s minimalism, maximum chic

A supermodel’s work was never done. When they weren’t walking the runway or on set, Cindy, Kate, Naomi and co were busy attending press events, photocalls and business meetings – often in the same day – relying on the pervading trend of the decade, ’90s minamlism, to provide pieces chic enough for all three. Simple, polished and effortlessly elegant, these pieces were neatly tailored separates in monochrome hues, paired with either boots, ballet flats or a simple heel. Echo Cindy Crawford’s smart-casual look with Jil Sander’s clean-lined crepe blazer and Auralee’s classic black pants for the office. Alternatively, try a chic skirt suit instead – Calvin Klein Collection’s ‘Camille’ jacket from the runway styled with a mini skirt is the very definition of ’90s minimalism. Whichever look you choose, just be sure to finish with a kitten-heel, like these Toteme pumps, and a sleek shoulder bag, courtesy of The Row, to tie everything together.

Effortless off-duty style

Nowhere did models master off-duty style better than at the airport. Whether heading to a fashion show, photoshoot or red-carpet event, their jet-set lifestyle meant they could often be spotted breezing through JFK or LAX fresh-faced in an effortlessly put-together outfit. The formula was simple: straight-leg jeans, a fitted tank or tee and a sweater – either layered on top or tied around their waist. Try it yourself with Calvin Klein Collection’s indigo-dyed denim and a soft knit by Toteme, adding a leopard-print bag into the mix for an homage to Kate Moss’s effortless look from 1994.

The less-is-more dress

The Supers may have favored a less-is-more approach to style, but that’s not to say they didn’t take a few risks when the occasion called for it. From daringly sheer finishes and plunging necklines to feathers, fringing and sequins, their looks always included a glamorous detail or two to ensure they delivered a memorable red-carpet moment. This was before the days of celebrity stylists and on-call glam squads, of course, which meant they often put their outfits together themselves – which added an authenticity and undone charm to every look. Case in point: Naomi Campbell, who attended the London premiere of Evita in 1996 wearing a figure-skimming silver slip dress by Gianni Versace; and Cindy Crawford, who turned heads in a striking, red backless gown at an event in New York in 1998. Let them inspire your next evening ensemble by opting for Versace’s draped floor-length gown paired with metallic accessories. Alternatively, try Clio Peppiatt’s beaded ‘Sophia’ design with nothing but a red lip and heels.

The ’90s leather jacket

A leather jacket was every model’s secret styling weapon. No matter how simple their outfit, they knew that throwing one over the top could completely transform what was underneath. While Cindy Crawford favored a sleek blazer, which she wore with everything from jeans and tailoring to LBDs, Linda Evangelista was often photographed in chic boxier styles with a more fitted waist – a popular silhouette throughout the decade. Then there was Kate Moss, who preferred (and still does) a biker jacket for a slightly grungier take. Fall/winter 2026’s power pieces come via Gucci and Saint Laurent – team their elevated updates on the leather jacket with Agolde’s aptly named ‘90’s Pinch Waist’ jeans or Toteme’s chic knee-length skirt.
