18 of the best winter coats

From heritage fabrics and deconstructed designs to touch-me textures, the best new winter coats will leave you longing for a cold snap

Plummeting temperatures and inclement weather are no excuse for letting your sartorial standards slip. This season, designers across the board have upped their outerwear game, presenting standout pieces that strike the perfect balance between timely and timeless.

Looking to imbue your closet with a little old-world glamour? Consider heritage designs, which are back in a big way – but not as you know them. The perennially chic beige trench, though not a cold-weather stalwart, cements its status as a wardrobe staple thanks to Givenchy, where the addition of a graphic black stripe gives this classic coat a wholly contemporary feel. A seasonal all-rounder, wear it as a layering piece when the temperature really bites.

The camel coat has also been reinvented, thanks to the addition of sculptural black elements and contrast stitching at Gabriela Hearst. If you want to up the ante after dark, look no further than Balenciaga’s exaggerated silhouettes and oversized shapes in directional shades of cobalt, fuchsia and pillar-box red – the perfect accompaniment to silk slip dresses, velvet separates and ’70s-inspired suiting.
