The ultimate high-heel guide

Discover SS19’s runway shoe stars and how to wear them now. By NAOMI BARLING

The mule

The ultimate slip-on-and-go style, the mule requires minimal effort. But opt for killer prints by Balenciaga, baroque bows by Brock Collection + Tabitha Simmons or graphic stripes by Dries Van Noten and you’re guaranteed maximum impact. Team them with a cropped hemline to show them off in all their foot-flashing glory.

The pump

The pump is a forever classic. Use its demure shape to polish off a modern grunge look, give a twist to double denim, soften an oversized pant-and-tee mix or add a touch of elegance to androgynous suiting. It’s the simplest way to add the ‘high’ to a hi/low mix.

The ‘barely there’ strappy sandal

Offered by everyone from Jacquemus to Saint Laurent, these ’90s-inspired ‘barely there’ designs are a minimalist’s dream. They work with everything and for every occasion: after-hours dresses? Summer florals? Sexy slip dresses? Masculine tailoring? Denim? They’re the perfect finishing touch for every one – just don’t forget the pedicure.

The platform

Is there any footwear more extra than the platform? Certainly not this season, with its jewel-toned, super-embellished, multicolored incarnations. Bring balance by day by wearing them with laid-back workman’s pants and a white shirt with rolled-up sleeves; but on nights out, don’t shy away from full-on Studio 54 feels.

The disco sandal

You’ve chosen the perfect ‘out out’ outfit, now all you need is the perfect shoe to be the cherry on the bottom. But how to last as long as possible on the dance floor in heels? This season, designers have risen to the comfort challenge: choose from irresistible crystals by Attico, silver standouts by Isabel Marant and embellished showstoppers by Miu Miu. They give new meaning to the term ‘all-nighters’.
