Everybody’s Wearing The Sweater Vest

Snug, sleek and endlessly playful, the sleeveless knit is this season’s styling essential

Tactile and timeless, a knit is one of the most beloved items in any modern closet – and one we’re likely to wear on repeat thanks to its mood-boosting qualities. But if pieces from our closet were ranked in terms of wardrobe mileage, there’s a new knit silhouette that would come out tops this season.

Enter, the sweater vest. These sleeveless knits, proposed by cult labels from Ganni to Gabriela Hearst for PS22, are supremely snug and endlessly wearable thanks to their easy layering potential. Slip them on over crisp poplin shirts or super-fine fitted rollnecks, or shrug them on atop a sweater to ward off winter’s chill. Understated iterations will prove a wardrobe building block, but there is much fun to be had with more playful versions in candy colors and patterns – they’ll add a joyful edge to any outfit and negate the need for further accessorizing.

Endlessly versatile, the sweater vest proves the ultimate layering piece

Distinctly retro in mood – think grandad-meets-1990s-muse – but decidedly contemporary in feel, a V-neck sweater vest will comfortably liven up any cold-weather look. Case in point: Acne Studios’ ‘Sunscape’ vest, which will prove escapist on the grayest winter days, while Ganni’s hot-pink Argyle vest will add a splash of vibrant color to even the most muted palette. For something a little more classic, Nili Lotan’s cricket sweater is a monochromatic dream that is as ideal paired with tailored pants in the office as with off-duty jeans come the weekend.

And, better still, they add warmth without bulk, meaning they’re the perfect outfit accompaniment for streamlined outerwear – think after-dark leather blazers and retro-inspired denims, or cozy shearlings. And come spring, they’re an easy win for trans-seasonal wardrobes when worn solo – or even pop one into your beach tote and slip it on over a bikini. The sweater vest truly is a staple, come rain or shine.
