Why Square-Toed Shoes Are Making A Comeback
From the FW25 runways to style insiders at Copenhagen Fashion Week – square-toed shoes are back with a bang, providing the effortless new-season update our wardrobes need, says GILLIAN BRETT
We’ve spent the summer months happily alternating between classic round-toed ballet flats and sleek leather sandals. But as we step towards fall, a new shoe shape is on our radar – next season is set to be all about square-toed silhouettes. Alaïa has been dominating the footwear game for many seasons now with its much-loved embellished ballet flats, and for his FW25 collection, creative director Pieter Mulier sent softly squared-off boots, pumps and thong sandals down the runway. Meanwhile, making its return to the New York runway after a six-and-a-half-year hiatus, Calvin Klein’s new creative director Veronica Leoni chose to step confidently into her new chapter at the house with slightly turned-up, square-toe slingback ballet flats from the brand’s archives.

When it comes to heels, this is a style we’re all quite familiar with – brands like Bottega Veneta and Toteme have long been flying the flag for angular square-toes. Riffing on minimalist ’90s styles, they are a natural companion to pared-back slip dresses and straight-leg jeans with a blazer and tee – add a shoulder bag and you’ve really nailed it. What feels newer are the blunt-toe ballet flats and loafers that lend a cooler feel to your look than their pretty, almond-toe counterparts – and therefore both deserve a place in your forever closet.
Consider Alaïa’s velvety suede ballet flats that conjure classic pointe shoes with their leather square toes. Lean into their more directional look with barrel-leg jeans and a tank top. For the office, Aeyde’s fringed ‘Belen’ loafers are perfect – just keep things on the more classic side with tailoring à la Cecilie Thorsmark. Alternatively, if you’re someone who likes to stand out from the crowd, you’ll love Jil Sander’s crinkled red glossed-leather loafers. Let this fashion-girl favorite pop against dark suiting, or show them off to their fullest with a midi skirt. Take note: square-toed shoes are the most effortless way to give your wardrobe a fall upgrade now.
