A shirt is one of those pieces that does it all. Whether worn the traditional way with jeans or pants, over dresses as a lightweight alternative to a jacket, or as a breezy poolside coverup, it’s a true staple in any wardrobe and promises maximum style mileage all year round. With that in mind, it’s always worth having a few on rotation, ideally in different colors and fabrics.

“There is nothing I don’t love about The Frankie Shop’s cult ‘Lui’ shirt. I adore red in summer, especially when paired with timeless stripes and the perfect oversized fit,” says NET-A-PORTER’s junior shopping editor Connie Daw, who will be wearing hers on vacation this summer. “If classic beachwear isn’t your thing and you’re after a relaxed coverup for the beach, throw it on over your favorite bikini between sea swims,” she adds. Ulla Johnson’s burgundy two-piece, complete with a ruched top and low-rise briefs, is a timeless choice – or style it with the matching shorts for an afternoon sojourn into town. Finally, reach for a raffia tote big enough to hold your beach towel, paperback and sunscreen, such as DeMellier’s timeless ‘New York’ style from our NET SUSTAIN edit.

When you arrive home, simply swap swimwear for sleek separates polished enough for work and dinner afterwards. “Toteme’s ‘Parachute’ maxi skirt might just be my pick of the season. I love the simple, clean-lined shape and how easy it is to style,” says Daw. Made from a weightless silk-blend in a voluminous shape, it’s the perfect way to style out a heatwave, and looks as chic paired with a bandeau top and heels as it does a tank and flats.

Whichever outfit you choose, tie it together with retro sunglasses courtesy of Brunello Cucinelli Eyewear and jewelry that gleams against bare, sun-kissed skin. Tom Ford’s gold-tone lariat necklace – strung with textured spacer beads that shimmer beautifully in sunlight – looks gorgeous draped along the front (or back) of a low-cut dress, while By Pariah’s scintillating ring stack will look stunning alongside a wedding or eternity band.
