How I Curate My Space: Tara Zadeh’s Fashion-Filled London Home

The fashion consultant and consummate host invites PORTER into her eclectic canalside townhouse in London’s Little Venice, where Persian craftsmanship, fashion-world finds and almost 100 pairs of shoes exist together in what she describes as “a beautiful mess”. By NATASHA BIRD

For Tara Zadeh, her home reflects her personal style – and a penchant for golden touches: “You find a lot of gold around – just the right amount, if you ask me – without it being ‘too much’. Although I don’t mind the ‘too much’.”

“I like to call it a beautiful mess,” says Tara Zadeh, summing up the London townhouse she shares with her husband and their two sons. Ostensibly, she is talking about her interior-design aesthetic, although she could just as easily be describing the accumulated wardrobe of gorgeous items that now sprawl across an entire bedroom – or even the colorful international career that has taken her from magazine design to handbag design and, now, to professional host.

Zadeh originally studied graphic design at prestigious Parsons in New York. Years later, after relocating to London, she launched her eponymous handbag label, which was stocked at NET-A-PORTER from its first season until its last. Today, she describes herself mostly as a fashion consultant, working on projects and events for fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands – which sometimes involves hosting soirées at her well-appointed home.

“I always feel like I have had 10 lives, but they all feel very connected,” she says. “I really wanted to find the perfect house. I kept telling my husband that that was my dream once we had our two boys. I saw this beautiful, white, four-story townhouse with direct access to a communal garden in the center of Little Venice, just by my favorite place to buy plants, Clifton Nurseries. I had to visit it immediately – and, two weeks later, we were moving in.”

Although Zadeh grew up between Paris and New York, she is also proudly Persian; while her French-Italian husband presents another excellent dimension. Rather than diluting or neutralizing of those influences, the couple have allowed them to mingle into a lovely, eclectic aesthetic.

“
I love pieces that remind you, and take you back, to an exact time and place… We’ve tried our best to have a mix of everything

Whether she’s hosting an event or an informal dinner, Zadeh loves to use flower arrangements and tablescaping to create a welcoming and thoughtful space

“Sometimes, I know my husband would like it toned down but I need to have character in my house,” she says, “It’s truly a reflection of my personal style. You find a lot of gold around – just the right amount, if you ask me – without it being ‘too much’. Although I don’t mind the ‘too much’.”

There are also handmade Syrian consoles, including a particularly unusual black-and-white mother-of-pearl piece. Three intricate mirrors came home from a trip to Yazd in Iran, where her father is from, and she has recently acquired a pale-green and pink set of glass drinking tumblers from Tunisia. “I love pieces like that because they just remind you, and take you back, to an exact time and place,” she says, “We’ve tried our best to have a mix of everything.”

In terms of major changes since moving in, the most significant intervention is one that many fashion lovers will appreciate: Zadeh has sacrificed a bedroom for her exquisite collection of clothes.

“I have almost 100 pairs of shoes. They were craving their own wall,” she says. “This might sound a bit superficial, but I love my wardrobe. I mean, I had to do it. It was becoming out of control and my husband encouraged me. I love it – I take my calls in there. I can be on the floor just staring around for hours.”

As is the case for so many of us, there is always a new job that needs doing in a room like this – rearranging, organizing, sorting, selling or color-coordinating. “I have a tomboy side, where I can just wear black for days, and then, suddenly, I can turn up with some feathers and sparkles and a splash of rainbow colors. My wardrobe says it all.”

Zadeh enjoys socializing in the living room and at the dining table. “The living room is where the bar is but, ultimately, we love spending time around the dining table”

Zadeh hosts professionally, so it is unsurprising that entertaining has influenced the way she’s organized her house. She recently staged a La DoubleJ trunk show at her home, as well as a sit-down dinner and a cocktail event for two different jewelry brands. On occasions like these, she often flings open the terrace doors and lets guests spill out into the garden.

For ordinary weekends, on the other hand, she gravitates towards the living room and the dining table. “The living room is where the bar is but, ultimately, we love spending time around the dining table,” she says. “It can sit up to 12 people. It’s so lovely to have chats and laughs all together. And, of course, that’s where the kitchen is – so all the good stuff comes out of there.”

Whether she’s hosting an event or an informal dinner, Zadeh always values a properly considered tablescape and often calls on her friend Joy Asfar, founder of creative studio Joy of Staying In, for input. “She has a great eye. Even when I do dinner parties with friends, I call her so that she can put together a beautiful table. She is my go-to person for everything from flower arrangements to tablescaping. I always want people to feel that there has been some effort put into welcoming them into a beautiful, thoughtful space.”

Zadeh’s thoughtfulness extends to art curation too. She grew up surrounded by creativity – and some of the most meaningful works in her home are by her uncle, the Iranian-American artist Y.Z. Kami.

“I feel very fortunate that he has gifted me a few pieces over the years,” she says. “The last one I received was my wedding gift nine years ago. Maybe I will get a new one next year for my 10-year anniversary.”

Elsewhere, a vast palm-tree photograph presides over the living room, taken by her close friend, fashion photographer Aurelien Caoudal.

Zadeh wants the next chapter of her collection to be one she begins herself. “When I hit 40, I will buy myself my first major painting,” she says. “I would love it to be by an emerging Iranian artist and then start from there. This is a goal I have set for myself.”

For a woman whose home feels so wonderfully unique, her design advice is to “stay authentic to who you are. Ultimately your home is a reflection of you. For my part, it can feel a bit chaotic at times, but I like to just feel it and go with the flow.”
