Alexina Graham’s AM/PM routine
British model Alexina Graham, Victoria’s Secret’s first redhead Angel, talks to PORTER about how her grandmother has influenced her skincare regime, the self-care app that she can’t do without, and why Yorkshire puddings and a good cup of British tea are non-negotiables
IN THE MORNING
I drink a bottle of water as soon as I wake up…
…instead of going straight for coffee and tea. My skin feels more hydrated throughout the day – so it looks clearer and feels plumper as a result.
But then a cup of British tea is my non-negotiable…
…I switch between the different breakfast varieties in the week so I don’t get bored. In my fridge, I always have the ingredients to make granola, porridge or an English muffin with poached eggs.
I don’t wash my face in the morning…
…I just splash it with water. Sometimes, I use a little face brush with the water for a morning exfoliation. I always wash it the night before, so it’s still clean when I wake up.
My skin always needs extra hydration…
…so I spray on Dr. Barbara Sturm Hydrating Face Mist, followed by Advanced Skin Care Oxygen Supreme serum. I then apply a tightening serum from Advanced Skin Care just under my eyes. I finish off with an SPF (always above 30), then apply Dr. Barbara Sturm Clarifying Spot Treatment to any new pimples. This is seriously transformative – when you apply it to the pimple, the color of the lotion matches to your skin tone, so it can also be used under makeup.
I don’t take any supplements…
…but I do enjoy a strawberry, banana and honey smoothie in the morning. I feel like I’m starting the day off right if I start with some fruit. I always remember my grandparents saying, “Line your stomach with fruit first and get all those vitamins and goodness in you to start the day.”
I swear by Muay Thai…
…I discovered the sport about six months ago and it’s changed my body in an incredible way in such a short amount of time. It’s such a full-body cardio workout and makes you feel so good. In Muay Thai you use your legs, knees and elbows. I always come out of a session sweating, and I know it’s worked by the next day as I’m always so sore.
The best beauty advice I’ve been given…
…is to start using anti-wrinkle cream at 25. My grandma told me to do it if I wanted to keep my skin looking young and fresh. She was totally right. She’s 84 now, but looks 64. I hope I look as young as she does when I’m her age.
IN THE EVENING
I’m a big believer in self-care…
…and as a late adopter of therapy, I can say that it’s made such a difference to my mental health. I always thought “nah, that’s silly”, but I started seeing a therapist a few years ago and it really helped. Talking out your feelings and what’s happening in your life is a big stress reliever and personally helps me with my down days and anxiety.
If I’m wired but tired…
…I have a bubble bath with Epsom salts and a few candles. In my evening baths I always use lavender-scented Epsom salt; it’s such a good relaxer and it feels good for your muscles, especially if you’ve worked hard at the gym that day and need a good long soak. Then, once I’m in bed I read the BBC News app and then turn on the Calm app for rain music to fall asleep to – it really helps me.
I always exfoliate…
…my body with a body brush. This also may sound a little strange, but I have found that after shaving and exfoliating my legs, the best moisturizer to apply is actually olive oil that you use for cooking. I had run out of moisturizer a few weeks ago and my legs were so dry and itchy from shaving, so I thought, “OK, what do I have?” I had olive-oil spray in my kitchen cupboard and it worked amazingly!
I have rosacea…
…so my night-time skincare is super-targeted. I wash my face with an antimicrobial cleanser from my dermatologist (Orentreich Medical Group), followed by its Multi-Therapeutic Tincture. I then apply a custom-made rosacea lotion, which helps to manage my flare-ups.
I like to go makeup-free at the weekend…
…especially if I have had a busy work week and have worn lots of makeup on shoots. I do a deep exfoliation and hydrating face mask once a week in the evening. I usually give my hair a deep-conditioning hair mask at the same time as my face mask to bring it back to life. I don’t let anyone touch my face except when I’m in NYC and I go to Advanced Skin Care Day Spa, as it took me a long time to get my skin right with the help of a dermatologist and facial specialist.
On my bedside table I have…
…a lip balm. I get really dry lips, so I apply a thick layer last thing before I go to sleep and first thing when I wake up in the morning. I also just started reading a book called The Silent Patient. I like to have a book at the side of my bed and read a few pages before sleeping, just to help my eyes get tired and relaxed. And I do have my iPhone nearby for setting my alarm for the next morning, reading the news and doing that last Instagram scroll of the day.
The last thing I Googled…
…was how to make Yorkshire puddings. I’m obsessed with my mum’s homemade Yorkshires. She gets just the right consistency between doughy and crispy.
