Maximalism Vs. Minimalism: The Style Debate

When it comes to vacation dressing, do you gravitate towards understated simplicity or bold self-expression? Sitting at opposite ends of the spectrum, SARAH LYSANDER and MONIKH DALE share their signature style formulas

The maximalist: Sarah Lysander, content creator

“What draws me to maximalist style is the storytelling. I enjoy layering unexpected pieces, mixing prints, playing with accessories and creating looks that feel expressive rather than overly polished. Summer fashion should be fun – and maximalism allows me to lean into that sense of joy, creativity and spontaneity.

“My biggest tip for nailing summer style is not to overthink it. Maximalism is really about self-expression, so the most interesting outfits are often the ones that feel personal rather than perfectly curated.

“I love building an outfit around a standout piece – whether that’s a beautiful print, an interesting silhouette or a vintage find with a bit of character. Once I have that anchor piece, everything else tends to fall into place. I’m loving pieces from Hunza G, Oséree and Loewe. They each bring something different to summer dressing but all have a wonderful sense of fun, color and personality.

“Accessories are such an important part of my style because they’re often what bring a look to life. Even the simplest outfit can feel completely different depending on the jewelry, bag or shoes you pair it with. Recently I’ve been styling statement earrings and necklaces and also vintage brooches! I tend to think of accessories as the finishing touches that make a look feel uniquely your own.”

The minimalist: Monikh Dale, stylist

“I think minimalist style really comes into its own in summer. The way a simple tank or column skirt can be worn alone, without being hidden beneath layers, feels very freeing. I always base my outfits around comfort. I have to be able to move around without constantly adjusting or thinking about what I’m wearing. I have two children now, so I want my wardrobe to move seamlessly between all the different roles I play throughout the day.

“I’m really drawn to primary colors. I love the idea of bold red, green and blue worn together in clean, color-blocked combinations, balanced by very simple silhouettes.

“My three beach staples are: a sarong or an oversized scarf that can double as a cover-up, a skirt for lunch or even a blanket when the children are napping; a great rattan or canvas tote that works for travel, the beach and carrying everyone’s essentials; and, finally, an easy throw-on dress that doesn’t matter if it gets creased – something I can roll up in a suitcase and wear from breakfast through to dinner simply by changing the accessories. Toteme does beautiful versions of all three.

“Minimalism is a very considered way of dressing – it’s all about balance. When it comes to accessories, I tend to choose one focal point, whether that’s a necklace, a bangle or a beautiful bag. If my shoes are a pop of color or print, I keep everything else quiet. Less is always more.

“Bags often make the outfit for me, which is why I choose to invest in brands such as The Row, Khaite and Loewe. They bring personality to even the simplest look through shape, texture and craftsmanship. I bought the large Toteme canvas tote in brown last year and have used it constantly – for travel, the beach, trips into town and days with the children. It’s become my everything bag, so I’d love to add the red version this season.”
