Which eveningwear tribe are you? Do you like to go all-out with sequins and feathers, or keep things more low-key in tailoring? Here at NET-A-PORTER, we’re loving the timeless elegance of Art Deco style and have recently welcomed two jewelry brands to our roster that absolutely nail the brief: Le Sundial – handcrafted in Italy and inspired by both “the elegance of Art Deco and the poetic, free-spirited charm of bohemian style,” according to its creative director, Silvia Dusci – and Juju Vera, the brainchild of artist, vintage dealer and jewelry designer Julia Ferentinos. With these stunning, vintage-informed accessories as your focal point, all you need are some slinky silhouettes that wouldn’t look out of place in the 1920s. One caveat: this look is less Great Gatsby, more streamlined glamour.
“I’m not one for either visible labels or ironic dressing, so I love the dandyish aspect of Art Deco style,” says Alexandra Huxtable, NET-A-PORTER’s senior fine jewelry buyer. “To avoid looking a little too polished (or like a Tamara de Lempicka painting, gorgeous as they are), I would style Juju Vera’s ‘Athena’ collar with a pair of heavily menswear-influenced, oversized tailored pants and a jacket, cinched with a Le Sundial tassel belt. When it comes to jewelry, it can be harder to wear it in a modern way, but the latest collections from Juju Vera and Le Sundial master the Art Deco trend while looking very cool and chic as hell. Their capsules give me the feeling of a 1920s woman imagining what a modern woman would wear in the future.”
Carina Nicklas (pictured on the right) is precisely that woman. The former tailor and art director turned content creator effortlessly infuses Art Deco influences into her day and evening looks. “Art Deco always feels to me like a nod to the Machine Age with clean geometry, a bit of flash and that optimistic sense of the future. I love that it was born from the roaring ’20s and still feels fresh now – timeless but never static.” Nicklas advises to keep things subtle and personal when trying it for yourself. “I love wearing my Le Sundial ivory pendant or a sculptural piece like my Sophie Buhai cuff, which has that modern, architectural feel. Structured coats or dresses from Toteme, Khaite, or Dries Van Noten instantly read as Art Deco to me, and vintage Manolos – I have quite a few pairs – always add that touch of old-school glamour. And I can never resist a good tassel – it’s such a playful way to nod to the style without overdoing it.”
For your next festive event, consider Toteme’s draped satin midi dress styled with Gucci’s silver, crystal-embellished mules and Le Sundial’s ‘Venice Opera’ earrings – the tasseled onyx beads will sashay as you dance. Or go monochrome with satin separates such as Khaite’s lustrous black midi skirt with Fforme’s cream V-neck blouse, adding a pop of color via Sophie Buhai’s scarlet ‘Teardrop’ pouch and a touch of sparkle with Manolo Blahnik’s crystal-embellished ‘Mayjou’ mules.
