When it comes to elevated wardrobe staples, sportswear doesn’t usually rank high on the list – but the spring/summer 2026 shows made a strong case for why it should. Make no mistake: athleisure can be chic too, and this season, it comes with a retro twist. From technical windbreakers to shield sunglasses and raglan tees, throwbacks to styles from the ’70s and ’80s have become every cool girl’s favorite way to elevate their wardrobe.

“I dress pretty relaxed day-to-day, so this trend feels like an easy one to get behind. It’s a nice way to bring some fun into an outfit without overthinking it,” says NET-A-PORTER’s senior buyer Olivia Dolphin. “I’ve been drawn to Dries Van Noten’s latest low-profile sneaker – a fun update to their viral ‘Dustin’ – which is an interesting crossover between a jazz dance shoe and a bowling shoe that feels both nostalgic and modern. Paired with The Park’s capri pants and an oversized casual jacket, such as Polo Ralph Lauren’s varsity style, they hit that balance between laid-back and put-together without trying too hard,” she adds.

As the undisputed queen of off-duty dressing, Zoë Kravitz nailed the sports-luxe look when she stepped out in New York recently wearing a baseball top with a sheer checked skirt and ballet flats. Follow her lead by teaming Guest In Residence’s version either with a silk slip or tailored pants, then add Adidas Originals’ ‘Taekwondo Mei’ sneakerinas and Gucci’s rimless cat-eye shades for the coolest take. If you’re more of a dress person but still want to lean into the trend, Saint Laurent’s maxi dress is the perfect choice. Made from figure-skimming crepe-jersey, it’s detailed with a trio of brown, green and yellow stripes and has a sporty racerback silhouette.
