You’ve booked your flights, your bags are packed and, mentally, you’re already at the beach. But there’s one last thing to tick off your to-do list before you can fully switch to vacation mode – and that’s deciding what to wear to the airport. While your suitcase will inevitably be filled with bikinis and breezy poolside cover-ups, your travel outfit needs to be a little more practical and put together. Ideally, it should be made up of simple separates that are comfortable enough for a long-haul flight yet sleek enough to wear straight from the arrivals lounge to lunch.

NET-A-PORTER’s buying manager Rachel Nimmo agrees. “My airport outfit needs to be stylish, comfortable and a touch preppy; a much harder brief than one would think. I always opt for relaxed silhouettes from St. Agni, High Sport and Auralee and look for fabrics that don’t crease easily, to ensure I look fresh when I arrive,” she says. “Modular outfitting is key for layering – especially when moving between climates – and footwear needs to be a slip-on, slip-off situation to maximize comfort onboard. Where possible, I’ll style with a colorful sock to make outfits pop.”

As frequent flyers, celebrities have long mastered the art of airport style – from Isabelle Huppert touching down in Cannes in an oversized trench and double denim last month to Laura Harrier and Julianne Moore breezing through the terminal in jersey tees and loose-fitting pants, they nail the brief every time. Emulate their relaxed elegance by styling Toteme’s embroidered silk shorts with Nili Lotan’s cashmere sweater and Bottega Veneta’s intrecciato leather ballet flats.

As Nimmo points out, lightweight layers are essential for navigating the various temperatures you’ll experience on your journey – pre-, mid- and post-flight. Both practical and chic, Saint Laurent’s jacket looks as good styled with leggings as it does denim and can be styled over dresses when you reach your destination, too.
