Big Sur, California

If you’re going to do Big Sur, it’s got to be by car. A road trip along the Pacific Coast Highway is the best way to take in the epic ocean views, dramatic cliffs and windswept beaches of California’s central coast. With a bohemian reputation, Big Sur was a mid-20th-century refuge for artists and writers, including Henry Miller and Jack Kerouac, who drew inspiration from its wild and untamed beauty. Take a horseback ride through redwood-shaded paths and hills covered with Monterey pines, or head down to Pfeiffer Beach, famous for its purple sand and the photogenic Keyhole Rock. The 80-foot-high McWay Falls is another one of the most photographed spots in Big Sur. Make sure you keep an eye out for migrating whales and pick up some of California’s signature mineral-rich kelp while you’re in the area.

The city of Chicago enjoys a wonderful waterside setting on the shores of Lake Michigan

Chicago, Illinois

If you’re after the buzz of a city like New York but with fewer tourists, visit Chicago. It’s the home of skyscrapers, deep-dish pizza and the blues. Take in the legendary architecture on a city river cruise with the Chicago Architecture Center, where guides will point out the tallest and most well-loved buildings that make up Chicago’s world-famous skyline. Chicago is also a great place for live entertainment, from festivals (including Lollapalooza, Chicago Jazz Festival and the Chicago Air and Water Show) to theater productions, improv comedy clubs, jazz and blues concerts, and sporting events. For more culture, visit one of the world’s largest collections of impressionist art at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Montana's Glacier National Park is famed for its magnificent landscapes – by day and by night

Glacier National Park, Montana

Glacier National Park is a breathtaking natural wonder. Aquamarine lakes and wildflower meadows give way to towering mountains inhabited by moose and grizzly bears. There are more than 700 miles of trails to guide you through the mesmerizing landscape, from family-friendly strolls to challenging hikes, so you’ll want to spend around five days here to truly soak it all up. Sacred ground to the Blackfeet, Salish and Kootenai tribes, the land holds both cultural and historical significance as one of the first national parks in the US. Summer draws big crowds, so it’s best to book accommodation well in advance; there are converted railway lodges and cozy private cabins within the park, or you can stay in a nearby town like Whitefish, and drive in.

New Orleans' French Quarter is the Louisiana city’s historic heart
New Orleans is “vibrant, soulful and steeped in culture… a city that pulses with energy year-round”

New Orleans, Louisiana

There’s something magical about New Orleans. It’s a city like no other – vibrant, soulful, and steeped in culture. As the birthplace of jazz, it’s home to legends like Louis Armstrong and Wynton Marsalis, and the inspiration of writers such as Tennessee Williams. There’s always something going on; the city pulses with energy year-round. Dress up for the lively Mardi Gras celebrations (the 2025 season kicks off on March 4), go alligator-spotting with a local swamp tour, eat your fill of pillowy-soft beignets in the French Quarter, and hop between the endless jazz bars. Don’t forget to try a Sazerac, the Nola-born cocktail is a sweet mix of sugar, cognac and bitters, served in an absinthe-rinsed glass – the best place for one is at the Roosevelt Hotel’s legendary Sazerac Bar.

With its picturesque towns and seaside location, Martha’s Vineyard is the ultimate New England escape

Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts

Seven miles off the south coast of Massachusetts, Martha’s Vineyard is the quintessential New England retreat. Known for its natural beauty and feeling of exclusivity, it’s long been the preferred escape for American presidents and their families, like the Kennedys and the Obamas. Come for utter disconnection, water-based activities (boating, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, paddle-boarding and bird-watching) and fantastic lobster rolls. There are six towns on the island, but Edgartown is the main hub for stores, art galleries and restaurants, where you’ll find some of the best seafood restaurants in New England. Lobsterville Beach and Menemsha Public Beach are the top spots for an invigorating swim.

Savannah, Georgia

The epitome of old-fashioned Southern charm, Savannah is a picture-perfect city where Spanish moss cascades from towering oak trees, and horse-drawn carriages clip-clop down cobblestone streets. The city’s laid out in an easy-to-navigate grid, with 23 historic squares and plenty of ornate architecture to admire. Explore on foot, either self-guided or by taking a themed walking tour including ghost tours – Savannah is said to be one of the most haunted cities in the US. Savannah’s culinary scene is experiencing a buzz, with innovative chefs putting their own spin on classic ingredients. Make a reservation for dinner at The Grey, an Art Deco restaurant in a 1938 Greyhound bus terminal, then head to the river where you’ll find a lively selection of craft beer pubs.
