FaceGym founder Inge Theron’s AM/PM routine
The entrepreneur and former beauty journalist INGE THERON shares her love of Brazilian massage, CBD baths and why she works out her face, body and brain
IN THE MORNING
As soon as I wake up…
…I snuggle with my kids, then grab my phone. It’s a bad habit, but I’m an entrepreneur – I have to. I’m also very ritualistic and start each day with chanting, breathing and setting my intension for that day. It’s my bit of self-therapy.
I live in my head a lot…
…but using the Elevate Brain Training app every morning helps me to use my brain in a different way and start the day [more productively].
I do a face workout…
…for at least five minutes while cleansing – the FaceGym facial exercise and massage technique has changed the tone and tightness of my skin. I have quite big pores from living in South Africa in a house that was a heat box, so I use our Electro-Lite Cleanser, then apply our Hydro-Bound hydrating serum – otherwise I get crinkly skin by 3pm. I do get puffy, though, and I love a glass of red wine and Japanese food, so I’ll do a drainage massage, too. [You just] hold your hands straight, with the thumbs bent out at 45 degrees, like a letter L, then put your thumbs under the jaw, so you have the sides of the hands on the cheeks and the tip of the index finger up under the inner corner of the eye. Then press and release as you work the hands outwards over the face – it’s amazing for draining.
I’m a tea fanatic
Instead of taking supplements, I drink different teas: turmeric, ginger, mate, green. I still take my pregnancy supplements, as they made me feel so good when I was pregnant and are a catch-all if my diet’s not so good. Plus, I take 1,000mg of vitamin C twice a day, which helps if I’m feeling run-down.
I have variations of a Bad Face Day (BFD)
If it’s a normal one, I have various sculpting tools I keep in the freezer, along with my eye gel. If it’s a medium BFD, I do the full FaceGym HIIT workout for a good 25 minutes. But if it’s a nuclear BFD, then I book in for one of our treatments with oxygen, massage, the whole thing.
I prefer great skin to makeup
At most, I wear Tom Ford Beauty’s Glow Tinted Moisturizer SPF15, or Sarah Chapman’s Skin Insurance SPF50, and if I have a meeting, a Max Factor mascara. I also love the Tom Ford Sheer Cheek Duo – it’s heaven and lasts for ever.
I used to be an exercise junkie
[At one point] I was doing three to four classes a day, but when I got pregnant, I experienced burnout. Now, I need to be calmer and more balanced, so I do Heartcore Pilates a couple of times a week, or yoga on my own.
I fast three days a week…
…usually Monday to Wednesday. I’ll finish dinner at 6pm with the kids, have a hot lemon water at 6am and stay off all food until lunchtime. If I need fuel, I have a liter of celery juice, and I make my own nut milk for my coffee. I’m married to an Italian and we like to eat pasta, but if I do this three days a week I keep at my perfect weight.
The best advice I’ve been given is…
…“It doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to be good.” I have a perfection problem and set the bar incredibly high, so this helps me lower that bar by 30 percent. That never-ending search to be perfect can leave you breathless, but I’m done with trying to impress others.
IN THE EVENING
I spike my bath with…
…CBD or magnesium or whatever salts and soaks I’m working on – at present it’s a plankton bathing powder that turns my towels green. I always use a washi Japanese scrub cloth, and love burning palo santo to get rid of negative energy. I also order liters of cold pressed oils, like apricot and watermelon seed, and add a scoop to the bath for myself and my kids. It’s just wonderful and leaves your skin super-hydrated – it’s a ritual that my mom did with me.
My best body hack is…
…if I haven’t been able to exercise, then I have an IR (infrared) sauna bag that I use at home. It’s not a wonderful experience sitting in a big sweaty bag, but I struggle with water retention. So, I jump in the bag and then this brilliant Brazilian masseur comes over and massages my legs to within an inch of their lives. This way, I can still get my butt in my jeans.
Before an event…
…I try to use the FaceGym Hyaluronic Roller the day before – I’m obsessed by how well it works. I also love the Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Universal Daily Peel pads and the 111Skin Masks, and I like to layer up hyaluronic acid with the Algenist Genius Liquid Collagen serum. I really believe that your face does not stop at your hairline and am very into scalp massage, as a good scalp means a good face. I go to Japan once a year and always receive a scalp massage as part of a facial. I usually get a makeup artist to do my face, as I love having false lashes, but if I’m doing it myself, the Bobbi Brown palettes and Pat McGrath Labs’ Mothership VII in Divine Rose eye palette are beautiful, and I wear either Pat McGrath Labs’ lipstick in Flesh 3 (the packaging is so glam) or Charlotte Tilbury’s Pillow Talk. I swear by Tom Ford brushes, too – when you apply your makeup with a good brush, it looks 10 times better.
I love a fasting retreat
I have digestion issues and go to Vivamayr or the Buchinger Wilhelmi clinic for a reset. I also try to have an annual checkup at Chenot wellness center or Lanserhof Medical Spa.
When I’m feeling wired but tired…
…I take Good Day Chocolate Sleep Supplements with melatonin – they work so well.
On my bedside table I have…
…Calmor ear plugs (they are the best in the world and now I can’t sleep without them); my Ganesha Indian god, who removes all obstacles; and a Daruma doll [from Japan], which helps you to manifest what you want in life.
