If ever there were an indicator of the mood or trend of the moment, pant silhouettes would be a good place to start. The free-wheeling ’70s were defined by party-ready flares, while the mid-2000s enjoyed drainpipe jeans that were worn on repeat by the likes of Alexa Chung and Kate Moss – both were a regular fixture of the festival and indie music scene at the time. And as life has slowed this year, silhouettes have loosened. This year, then, is the era of the wide-legged trouser.

This utilitarian twill pair from US label Co blends the ease of California with a sense of urban cool – the earthy brown hue is a fresh alternative to business-like black and navy, and is more winter-weather ready than a crisp white. With a high waist and a pooling hemline, these leg-lengthening pants are ideal paired with a neutral knit for nighttime. By Malene Birger’s ribbed sweater, with its metallic sheen and open back, is an ideal afternoon-to-aperitivo-hour hybrid – slip on a snuggly shearling coat by Isabel Marant and a pair of Manolo Blahnik heels for a minimalist evening look. Loeffler Randall’s understated grab-handle bag and gold-tone jewelry are the perfect finishing flourishes.

For daytime, add a fitted turtleneck from Re/done and Burberry’s oversized Argyle knit for a smart take on at-home dressing; Saint Laurent’s crisp white sneakers, Chloé’s alphabet necklace and a tonal cross-body bag offer a sense of relaxed elegance that is both chic and casual.
