Get dressed with Victoria Sekrier

With a client list that includes Oscar-winning actress Alicia Vikander, Russian-born, London-based stylist VICTORIA SEKRIER is helping to make red-carpet dressing cool again, and her personal style – best described as elegant-meets-edgy – is equally covetable. Here’s how she does it – and how you can, too

Fashion

Mix high-end with thrift store

“When I moved to London 10 years ago, I went to every vintage shop and bought every floral-print dress I could get my hands on. London is experimental and daring. It’s not try-hard; everyone just kind of does their own thing. For me, the London look is about mixing high-end pieces with thrift-store finds.”

Don’t change your entire look after hours

“I’ll dress up if I have a big event to attend, but generally my look is fluid. I won’t go home after work to change if I’m heading out that evening; I’ll just add some special earrings or slip on a kitten heel. I feel like that’s the modern woman’s way of doing day-to-night dressing.”

Blur fashion’s gender lines

“I always go for classic, timeless pieces that blur the lines between masculine and feminine. I love wearing designers like Céline, Rosetta Getty, J.W.Anderson and Dries Van Noten. They might seem very different from one another, but I select the pieces from each brand that work for me. I love buying coats and pants from Dries because the cut is quite masculine, whereas J.W.Anderson creates amazing classic pieces but enhances them by adding quirky details. With Céline, it’s just all-round perfection.”

Less is more

“I only ever wear earrings and a watch. I don’t like anything that can be distracting, so I love earrings because even when you wear them they aren’t constantly in your line of sight. If I’m going out I might wear chunky pearl earrings by Alighieri, whereas for daytime I’ll wear a more delicate pair by Sophie Bille Brahe or Ana Khouri. My watch is a suitably discreet Lugano by Larsson & Jennings with a black strap and face.”

Create your own fashion uniform

“I’d describe my style as a bit of a uniform. It’s very practical and effortless in the sense that I fall back on the same pieces time and time again, but there is a very definite change with the seasons. During the winter, I live in rollneck jumpers and tailored pants with Eytys sneakers or Alyx boots; in summer, I love wearing fluid silk skirts and dresses with ballet pumps or Rosetta Getty flats. My style is also quite black and white; in cold weather I prefer to wear dark colors, but when it’s warm I love to wear white, and my whole look becomes much softer. Ultimately, I just want to wear clothes that I feel comfortable in. Plus, I travel all the time and pared-back clothing makes packing much easier. If you have a uniform, you can throw things in and you know it’s all just going to work.”
