Everybody’s wearing: The fashion week edition

The four-week fashion fest is finally over. But while the collections we saw on the runway might dictate next season’s biggest trends, it’s what fashion’s finest wore to the shows that really tells us what’s hot right now…

Scarf-print dresses

Scarf-print dresses – by the likes of Preen, Loewe and Rixo London – turned the streets into moving art installations during fashion month. For off-duty days, channel Linda Tol’s laid-back look and team your prints with sneakers and a slouch bag. Then, come sundown, take a leaf out of Chloé Harrouche’s book and wear them with barely-there sandals and an oversized blazer.

Brown blazers

FW18’s easiest style trick? Swap your trusty black blazer for a brown one. It’ll nod to this season’s ’70s mood, plus autumnal hues look great with everything from vintage-inspired straight-leg jeans to of-the-moment tonal looks and cycling shorts, as championed by Helena Bordon. Finding the right fit is imperative: opt for a slightly oversized, boxy cut to nail the boy-meets-girl effect.

Western pieces

Raf Simons kicked off our western obsession when he sent cowboy boots down the runway for his Calvin Klein 205W39NYC debut back in FW17. That might sound like eons ago in the fashion world, but instead of waning, our ardor is intensifying. This season virtually every show-goer had imbued their look with a little way-out-west touch, whether in the form of fringed denim, saddle bags, pie-crust collars, chunky belts or Navajo-style knits. If it’s not your first time at the rodeo, try all of them at once.

Silk scarves

We credit Giedre Dukauskaite for kick-starting this trend: the Lithuanian model always stows a few silk scarves in her carry-on, ready to inject any look with a little old-world elegance – and it’s catching on. She may even have inspired Riccardo Tisci, who treated front-row guests to headscarves festooned in Burberry’s new logo for his recent debut show. Wind one around the base of your ponytail or tie it around your bag straps for the easiest possible way to add a little memorable flair.

Raincoats

Worn by everyone from stylist Brie Welch to fashion consultant Vanessa Hong, the humble raincoat became the breakout star of the recent New York Fashion Week shows (thanks to the torrential showers). Practical yet cool, these jackets are proof that you don’t (always) have to suffer for fashion. Take your cues from Pernille Teisbaek, who is the undisputed queen of this look – her husband Philip Lotko is the co-founder of cult outerwear brand Rains – by opting for clean lines and oversized styles.

Green

Synonymous with freshness and regeneration, it seems fitting that green, in all its many shades, is becoming the color of the new season. It dominated the FW18 runways (see Gucci, Marni, Moschino and Prada) and now fashion insiders such as Donna Wallace are proving that it’s more than just a runway eye-catcher. Start slow with accessories; nothing enlivens blue jeans and a white tee quite like mint green mules or an emerald party pouch.

Jumpsuits

This is your one-piece way to nail FW18’s utility trend. Championed by everyone from model Gigi Hadid to stylist Linda Tol, it’s impossible to overstate this piece's throw-on-and-go qualities. Whether you opt for muted tones or Ganni’s hot pink designs, simply team it with kitten heels and a pair of statement earrings and you’ll be ready for anything.

Leopard print

Maximalists will revel in the return of this wild print. Creative director Anne-Laure Mais and blogger Erika Boldrin have both been spotted in animal-print trophy pieces, but there’s a low-key way to wear it, too: follow in stylist Rachael Wang’s chic footsteps by using playful leopard-print accessories to add personality to all-black ensembles.

White boots

Our final street-style directive? Boasting all the wearability of black but with added wow-factor, bright white boots are set to be huge this season. Add edge to feminine looks by going for the lace-up style favored by fashion consultant Hedvig Sagfjord Opshaug, or tick off two major trends at once by opting for Isabel Marant’s white cowboy boots. Just remember: these kicks look best box fresh, so be sure to side-step any puddles.
