The maxi coat

A big, voluminous coat is one of the chicest wardrobe updates you can make right now, and the key to ensuring your new floor-sweeping layer has style mileage is to invest in immaculate tailoring and exquisite fabrics. Since launching The Row in 2006, Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen have remained steadfast in their focus on exceptional materials. In an oversized silhouette inspired by traditional menswear, the minimalist ‘Cassiopea’ black maxi coat is crafted from a beautiful blend of wool and mohair – a fabric that’s perfect for a winter coat, thanks to its heavier weight, and also helps to keep the exaggerated lines looking sharp. Newer to the scene but similarly thoughtful in design is Tove, which made its London Fashion Week debut for fall/winter ’23. Opening the show with long-line layers, the rising label later sent its ‘Loren’ coat down the runway in an unmissable graphic print. Mirror the styling by loosely belting yours over a turtleneck and silky pants.

Party flats

The cool-girl way to ground partywear this season is to swap high heels for fancy flats. To meet ‘fancy’ requirements, your dancing shoes must either be adorned with embellishments that dazzle like a disco ball or made from something plush. Turn to an iconic shoe brand that excels in both departments: Manolo Blahnik. Handmade to high standards following the lines of a beautiful sketch drawn by Blahnik himself, the ‘Luanda’ flats are crafted from glossy black satin with slim ribbons that wrap elegantly around the glistening crystal brooch topping the pointy toes. Elsewhere, Berlin-based Aeyde’s ‘Uma’ Mary Jane ballet flats are made at a family-run factory from a sumptuous velvet that holds the depth of the red shade so richly. Style them with straight-leg jeans and a dressy top, or opt for modern tailoring to put a contemporary twist on tuxedo dressing.

Statement knitwear

The winter season always brings with it a host of great knits to choose from, but it’s the more maximalist sweaters that are currently topping our wish lists. Keep things simple when it comes to the silhouette and choose vibrant patterned or striped styles that will instantly elevate your go-to jeans and comfiest track pants. One of our top picks is from Gigi Hadid’s uplifting knitwear brand, Guest In Residence – the forest green, navy and cobalt cashmere sweater has a sporty feel thanks to its wide, rugby-style bands. Layer the ribbed neckline with a silver necklace, or wrap a plain sweater in one of the design’s shades around it and tie by the sleeves. Alternatively, embrace Jonathan Anderson’s sense of playfulness with Loewe’s wavy sweater and balance it with a fail-safe pairing of black pants and loafers.

Haikure

You are in exactly the right place to discover the newest names to know. Just dropped on NET-A-PORTER, Italian denim brand Haikure celebrates the ease of relaxed, casual dressing. Placing the environment at the heart of the choices it makes, the label works to lower its impact by prioritizing local production, using considered materials where possible, and reducing both water usage and pollution. In a faded light-blue wash, its ‘Spencer’ jacket has an oversized fit, while the mid-rise ‘Bethany’ jeans have an ultra-slouchy wide-leg shape. Add both to your existing capsule wardrobe and wear them on repeat.

Burgundy bags

Looking for something to have and to hold for more than just one season? Refine your search for bags to brands that strongly value the art and importance of craft, then filter your finds by a shade that’s trending now but has timeless appeal: burgundy. Just as versatile as classic black or brown totes, burgundy bags will enrich the warmth and textures of your winter clothes, then add contrast to spring looks further down the line. Featherweight to carry, Loewe’s pleated ‘Paseo’ bag has been crafted in Spain from buttery leather, with handles that are artfully threaded through the body. Larger but just as light, The Row’s Italian-crafted ‘N/S Park’ tote comes in a durable leather with a textured grain. Style either with tonal hues, brighter reds or muted grays for FW23.

Velvet dresses

Every year, luxe velvet dresses and the holiday season go together like fine wines and cheese. Exclusively available at NET-A-PORTER, Alex Perry’s take on the perennial favorite comes in a sophisticated strapless silhouette – in fact, Hailey Bieber wore a similar blue dress by the Australian brand with silver sandals, dark nails and a tousled updo. Elsewhere, Proenza Schouler’s gown has a gorgeously draped neckline and an open back with twisted straps. Pair it with pumps and a metallic clutch for black-tie events or glamorous New Year’s Eve plans.

Slouchy boots

The revival of the ’80s slouchy-boot trend has been gaining momentum for a few seasons now, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down. Boasting endless styling potential, slouchy boots can be worn pushed down over jeans, or as knee-high underpinnings to a long trench coat or midi dress. Designed in New York, Khaite’s covetable ‘River’ boots are made from black leather that boasts a soft gleam, while Paris Texas’s iteration has a similar shape but a bolder snake print. Act fast, though: boots by both brands remain in high demand.

Winter warmers

Stylish and snuggly, winter warmers are a feel-good investment – and make great stocking stuffers, too. One of Acne Studios’ signature ‘Vally’ scarves, for example, provides the perfect pop of mood-boosting color during the colder months. The brightly checked yarns also feel wonderfully fuzzy thanks to the alpaca, wool and mohair blend. Meanwhile, Arch4’s ribbed beanie – part of our consciously crafted NET SUSTAIN edit – is knitted from certified-organic cashmere and has a folded cuff. The sage-green hue is exclusive to NET-A-PORTER and will work with both gold and silver hoop earrings.

Sleek homeware

Given its tendency to look a little cold when not executed harmoniously, stainless steel can feel daunting to incorporate into your interiors scheme. Our trick for nailing the trending theme is to start by injecting small, shiny pops of it into your kitchen. Part of Tom Dixon’s Brew collection, which takes inspiration from art deco forms and renders them in a hyper-reflective finish, the sleek cafetière is an exact match to the coordinating espresso cups – let them take pride of place on a marble or wooden countertop. When it’s time to swap coffee for champagne, reach for Louise Roe’s sculptural coupes. The best bit? They’ll also double up as a serving option for desserts.
