Nicole Kidman’s Hairstylist Shares His Golden Rules For Covetable, Everyday Hair
Whether it’s the short chop he crafted for Nicole Kidman at this year’s Met Gala, her high-volume ponytail at the Golden Globes, or his architectural styling for cool-girl clientele Rooney Mara, Kristen Stewart and Florence Pugh, hairstylist ADIR ABERGEL manages to make whimsical red-carpet hair decidedly covetable for the everyday. Here, he tells MALENA HARBERS just how he does it…
Lean into your individual style
“My favorite hairstyle to create is hair that is authentic to the individual. I love designing something unique and making my client feel so special when she hits the red carpet. Some standout favorites include the bouffant power ponytail on Nicole Kidman for this year’s Golden Globes. I loved the structure of this style, but it still felt soft and sexy and with a Valley of the Dolls vibe.
“When I work with Rooney Mara, we always collaborate on more severe, slicked-back architectural hairstyles. When I style Charlize Theron, we explore reimagined short cuts like bowl cuts or the classic blowout – or sometimes even chopping all of her hair off.
“My top tip is to figure out what makes you, you – and stay true to that. Explore and have fun. Hair can be washed and you can start all over again. If you get a cut you don’t like, remember it will grow out again.”
Small tweaks can make a big difference
“If you’re short on time, just do the top sections of your hair. A good hair day can have a big impact on how you feel overall. When your hair looks shiny and fresh [on top], it can make your whole vibe feel more polished.”
Rethink how you rough-dry hair
“Use paper towels on wet hair to absorb excess moisture – they’re softer than cotton towels and help reduce frizz by minimizing friction. You will then get a smoother blowout while keeping your hair’s natural body and movement. I also recommend rough drying or air drying your hair about 80 per cent before styling.”
Always use a finishing product
“I use Virtue Healing Oil for every single style I create, either as a foundation product when hair is damp or as a beautiful finisher on dry hair. It has an extremely lightweight, non-greasy formula that is supercharged with Virtue’s Alpha Keratin 60ku hair healing protein. The formula completely melts into hair and makes everything shine brighter. Plus, the scent is amazing, and all my clients love it.”
Find the right routine for your hair
“I tell all my celebrity clients to treat their hair like their skin. It needs consistent care to stay healthy and hydrated. That means using nourishing products daily and a hair mask once a week. I love Virtue’s Restorative Treatment Mask for thick hair or the brand’s Flourish Mask for finer hair.
“Everyone’s hair is different, so tailor your routine and products to your texture. Fine or oily hair might need to be washed daily, but only apply conditioner from the midshaft to the ends. Dry or textured hair may require less frequent washes and conditioner all over. For all hair types, but especially if you color or heat-style your hair, sleep on a silk pillowcase – it makes a real difference in your hair’s vibrancy.”
For an easy updo…
“Add texture first so it looks effortless and not too done. Start with a quick bend from your iron for a broken-up look, then spray dry shampoo for extra texture. Next, twist your hair into a loose, deconstructed shape and secure it with a clip or pin. For placement: start mid-head for a French twist, at the nape for a low bun, or at the top for a cool topknot – look up to keep the nape tight.”
To recreate Nicole’s high-energy hair…
“The bouffant [at the Golden Globes] was inspired by the ’70s. It’s playful and versatile and you can easily pair it with a great pair of jeans for a casual date or a cocktail dress. The key to this power pony is to double elastic band the ponytail, meaning one elastic band at the base and the other an inch above. This helps create the dramatic volume and bounce. After securing the ponytail, I like to section off a piece from the top of the ponytail, back comb it and secure it to the top of the head with two bobby pins by bringing it forward. I flip it back into place with the rest of the ponytail and then brush it together. This trick keeps this pony fluffy and high.”
For fuller-looking hair…
“Forty per cent of women experience hair loss and hair thinning before the age of 40. The good news is that we are bringing this discussion to the forefront with technology and proven solutions like PRP [platelet-rich plasma], exosome treatments and products specifically designed for women’s hair loss such as Virtue’s Flourish range.
“While you’re working on growing more hair, you can use products to make the hair you have look thicker. I like ones that are moisturizing while thickening because fine hair is fragile, but of course you want them to be weightless. My go-to is Virtue’s Thickening Styling Treatment. I use it before all of my blowouts or even when leaving hair to air dry.”
