The Beauty Memo

6 of the best hair accessories for fall

The easiest and best beauty update you can make for spring/summer? Add one of these little extras to your look, says SUZANNE SCOTT

An embellished slide is a super-fast way to add glamour to beachy waves

Best for desk-to-dinner drama: A slide

Like slipping into a higher heel, a clip is a simple way to dress up naturally textured hair for an evening out. Twist a section of hair on one side of your head and secure just behind your ear with the slide. Pearls look cooler when dressed down rather than up, so pair your slide with luxe cashmere.

Best for an ’80s vibe: A bow

The ’80s are back, and while fashion is revisiting all its good (and bad) moments, beauty is taking a far subtler approach. For a nod, there’s no better way to do it than with this embellished velvet bow. To keep it modern, wear with a disheveled low ponytail, a neat braid or a messy half-up style, and top off with a dark and richly pigmented lip color such as Tom Ford Beauty Boys & Girls Emma.

Best for a romantic up-do: Crystals

A delicate spray of clear crystals works particularly well on loose, undone hair to add polish without feeling OTT. Spray Hair by Sam McKnight Cool Girl Barely There Texture Mist through your hair to give some grip before twisting it up towards the nape of your neck and securing into a loose chignon. Push the pin into the bulkiest part of your knot so it will stay put, and wear with something appropriately ethereal.

Best for wearing with an LBD: A gold barette

Pared back and pretty, this gold barrette is an instant dress-up for that last-minute invitation and is the perfect accessory to pull back your hair without the need for intricate styling. Take a section of hair from either side of your face, just above and behind your ears, loosely join them in the middle at the back of your head and secure them together with this ornate hair clip. A light misting of Sachajuan Hairspray will keep everything in place.

Best for vintage glamour: A scarf

A classic patterned silk scarf makes an elegant replacement for the hair tie and turns a simple ponytail into something far more elegant. Position your ponytail at the back of your head in line with the tops of your ears and secure with an elastic. Allow a few stray pieces to fall around your face so the hairstyle doesn’t look contrived. Gather the scarf lengthways and tie it around the base of your ponytail in a knot or a bow. Silk will slip on just-washed hair, so secure in place with two or three hair grips.

Best for easy up-styling: A scrunchie

In another nod to the ’80s, the scrunchie has been resurrected, but this time it’s oversized and in luxe fabrics and finishes. Far too good to be worn to the gym, use one to pull back hair into a low or mid pony. Best worn with a slip dress.
