Get dressed with Margherita Missoni
The scion of an Italian fashion dynasty, MARGHERITA MISSONI has style hard-coded into her DNA. The Milan native brings the same sense of fun to her wardrobe as she does to her eponymous childrenswear line, with eclectic and colorful looks that surprise and inspire. Want to inject your own closet with the same exuberance? Here’s how it’s done…
Don’t play it safe
“I don’t dress like a typical Milanese. Their style is quite understated whereas mine is much louder; I love to play with color. Sometimes I will look back on an outfit and cringe, but that’s okay. When I went to my first Met Gala in 2004, I wore a great dress but accessorized it with a tiara and big hairstyle that I would never wear now – the theme was Marie Antoinette and I really went for it. I think I will appreciate it again at some point, but more time needs to pass first.”
Invest in the classics
“The most treasured piece in my closet is a vintage Lanvin coat from the 1940s. I got it when I was living in Paris. My grandmother Rosita, co-founder of Missoni called me at 8.30am from a local flea market and told me I had to come to meet her because she had found a coat I just had to try on. So I did, even though I’d been out late the night before. She said I was always buying things because they were fun or colorful or different, and although this black woolen coat might be simple, it was cut in the best way from the finest-quality fabric, and that it should serve as a reminder of how beautiful things are really made.”
Support the next generation
“I have a lot of favorite designers, but I love them all for different reasons. Marco de Vincenzo’s use of color is amazing; it’d be fascinating to see what he’d do at a house like Missoni. Isa Arfen has great style and a really distinctive aesthetic, she doesn’t just chase trends. Simon Porte Jacquemus is super talented and I love the fact that his collections are so reasonably priced because it means I can buy more! I’m also a huge fan of Jonathan Anderson – the collections he produces for J.W.Anderson and Loewe are incredible.”
Try a trench
“I love trench coats – they are so versatile and can really pull a look together. I have tons in loads of different colors. My favorite, which unfortunately was stolen from me, was a vintage Saint Laurent trench from the ’70s, but I also have a Burberry one with leather sleeves that I love, and a beautiful textured Hermès design from the ’80s. They aren’t the only thing I collect: my name means ‘daisy’, so I have loads of flowery clothes and homeware. Plus, I’ve been collecting head pieces since I was a little girl. I recently got a magnetic one with colorful daisies that I cannot wait to wear.”
Always carry lipstick
“I only wear makeup when I’ve got an important business meeting or I’m going to an event, but I always keep a red lipstick in my bag because that’s all you need to take any look to the next level. Sometimes I’ll smudge a little on my cheeks and use it as a blush. I love Charlotte Tilbury’s Matte Revolution The Queen lipstick – the shape makes it super easy to apply.”
