One of the first things to consider is the fabric. To nail the brief of something snuggly, natural fibers deserve to be a top priority. The Row’s ribbed ‘Danielas’ dress is made using charcoal wool that’s weighty enough to fall beautifully to the floor but still hold the exaggerated shape of the fluted cuffs. Store it folded to avoid stretching out the shoulders with a hanger and, when it comes to styling, slip a leather trench coat on top. Elsewhere, another knit to note is Khaite’s Merino wool ‘Clarice’ mini, which has a chic turtleneck and softly flared skirt.

A chunky turtleneck sweater dress in a chic neutral hue is perfect for the colder months – just add a tonal bag and gold jewelry

If you’re in the market for a knitted dress that’s a little more evening-ready, Jacquemus should be your first port of call. From the Le Chouchou collection, which showgoers watched from little white row boats in the grounds of the Palace of Versailles, the ‘Dao’ dress has a glamorously high, thigh-grazing slit and is so finely knitted that it sensually hugs every curve. Meanwhile, Isabel Marant’s cable-knit ‘Nazae’ dress has delicate collarbone cutouts and comes in a mini length that looks stylish paired with this season’s trending knee-high boots. One for fancier events, Pucci’s maxi dress is emblazoned with striking Fiori Di Loto blooms, which debuted in the 1960s and look just as mesmerizing in photographs as they do in person. Complement the high neck with a chunky chain necklace, or draw the eye down to it with sculptural earrings.

If a dose of color is what’s missing from your winter wardrobe, turn to the man who works magic with a bold, painterly palette: Henry Zankov. Knitted in vibrant blocks that have the same impact as one of Henri Matisse’s ’50s collages, Zankov’s ‘Lyndsey’ dress has a minimalist silhouette to balance the boldness of the clashing shades. Layer a neutral turtleneck beneath it on extra-chilly days and add chunky boots. Alternatively, stick to one shade – but make it one of this season’s hottest. Dôen’s chocolate-brown ‘Estella’ style is sweetly ruffled at the neckline and cuffs. It will look beautiful with Mary Jane ballet flats, or you could add a pair of androgynous loafers to create a cool contrast.
