5 Ways To Wear A Chain Necklace

The classic chain necklace is a jewelry-box staple, but how can you refresh your collection this season? Try these simple styling tips, says NET-A-PORTER’s fine-jewelry buyer EMILY JOHNSTON

Choose a chunky chain

“When it comes to chunky chains, the brief for this season is simple – souped up, maxi-sized links are back,” says Johnston. “There really is no way to go too big or too bold, because a chunky chain is so versatile; it will elevate a simple tank top or summer dress for vacation dressing but can also be paired with a striking strapless column dress for a really modern approach to accessorizing eveningwear.” If you want to invest in an ultra-precious chunky chain design, choose styles crafted from 18-karat gold – while they’re not affordable to all, these are the pieces that will be passed down for generations. “David Yurman is the maestro of crafting chains that feel classic yet fresh, often riffing on unusual link combinations, while Uniform Object has modernized the curb chain with a diamond-studded clasp to be worn front and center,” explains Johnston.

Create an ultra-luxe neckscape

“There are multiple ways to create a chic layered look with chains,” explains Johnston, “but by far the easiest is to choose a ready-made multi-strand design, or long-length styles that can be looped twice for a double tour.” Marie Lichtenberg, Yvonne Léon and Marla Aaron all offer two-strand chains that each have a unique detail – whether it’s a sentimental locket, diamond-set link or scintillating padlock – kindly doing all the hard work for you. “If you’re creating your own chain stack from scratch, however, it’s important to plan out your neckscape from the base layer upwards, adding carefully spaced-out lengths to avoid tangles,” suggests Johnston. “Don’t be afraid to experiment with mixed-metal tones or pieces that have a dash of color either – whether that’s with vibrant enamel detailing or flashes of boldly colored gems; the more eclectic the better.”

Switch to silver and white gold tones

“Silver tones continue to grow in popularity for chain necklace designs, sparked by plenty of shining pieces upon the SS25 runways,” says Johnston. “Sterling silver designs are great for oversized, statement pieces, but you can also invest in white-gold designs set with diamonds if you’re looking for elegant strands on a smaller scale,” she adds. Loren Stewart and Laura Lombardi are the queens of chunky sterling-silver chains, while Anita Ko offers understated white-gold designs. “The cult silver-chain trend right now is for short, almost choker-length designs – they pair perfectly with summer-black ensembles and feel a little more contemporary than yellow gold for after-dark accessorizing.”

Try longer lengths

“Long lengths are the most casual iteration of a chain necklaces in my opinion,” says Johnston. “In a split second, you can elevate a simple shirt or T-shirt, no matter what the neckline, and they also feel ultra-chic when worn over a swimsuit or bikini”. She continues, “Try to keep long chains on the fine side as chunkier chains will feel too heavy in summer heat, but if you want to add a little intrigue seek out pieces that have loops and locks that allow you to add interchangeable pendants, such as Foundrae’s ‘Belcher’ chain.” Octavia Elizabeth’s ‘Imogen’ chain is an ultra-light, 18-karat gold design that will gently glimmer in the sunshine thanks to its delicately etched links, while Lauren Rubinski’s 14-karat gold chain is hollow, so its voluminous links won’t weigh you down.

Invest in a diamond-set design

“While plain, all-metal chains are more likely to serve you best for everyday wear in the office or during weekend downtime, there’s something irresistible about a diamond-set chain,” says Johnston. “If, however, you’re an incurable magpie, a diamond-set chain necklace can offer a high-low, smart-casual approach to wearing diamonds for daytime while still feeling special for evening events.” Pavé-diamond-set links, baguette-cut diamond details, and chains strung with miniature diamond drops will add subtle scintillation and can be layered to make maximum impact. “A diamond-set chain is a great contemporary alternative to a classic tennis necklace too,” continues Johnston; “It’s the ultimate wear-me-everywhere piece that belongs in every jewelry box.”
