It’s been two years since British designer Daniel Lee was appointed creative director of Italian heritage house Bottega Veneta. A relative unknown at the time – despite boasting a stellar résumé that included stints at Maison Margiela, Balenciaga and Celine – the industry at large was eager to see what Lee envisaged for the storied brand’s next chapter. And it did not disappoint. Captivating editors and buyers alike with his exuberant take on modern minimalism, his bags and shoes quickly became cult favorites. Of course, Lee’s sartorial mastery extends far beyond accessories, and his ready-to-wear is equally as understated yet impactful.

Lee’s SS20 collection is no exception. In fact, it’s the deceptive simplicity of Lee’s work that has charmed PORTER’s junior fashion editor Marquessa Lucas Box. Like many of us, she views a new season as the perfect excuse for a closet overhaul.

“The opening look of Daniel Lee’s SS20 collection for Bottega Veneta made everyone’s heads turn. This black stretch-knit midi dress perfectly illustrates how, sometimes, the simplest ideas can be the most effective. As a modern interpretation of the classic LBD, with its asymmetric neckline and dramatic cut-out back, this chic and versatile piece will put a fresh spin on your summer closet. By day, I’ll be wearing mine with flat sandals and a raffia tote. After dark, I’ll style it up with a chunky chain necklace and mules. This dress promises sophistication, whatever the setting.”

If you’re on a similar hunt for summery pieces that can be styled in myriad ways, then Paradised’s cotton playsuit is well worth considering. Striking the balance between refined and relaxed, it will make dressing for summer in the city a cinch. Or, finished with gold jewels and gladiator sandals, it will make picnics in the park infinitely more chic. Of course, great swimwear is the core of any well-edited summer closet, and with the aptly named label Cult Gaia recently launching its own line, finding the perfect style is easier than ever. Our top tip? Don’t discount swimsuits just because you’re not going on vacation. These versatile summer-closet staples double up as sleek bodysuits, so pair them with classic denim and swishy midi skirts for maximum style mileage.
