While Oroton’s heavenly dresses are underscored by a sense of wearability that makes them a viable option every day, the more dramatic styles promise to come into their own for event-dressing

As lockdowns continue to loosen across the globe and life returns to a pre-pandemic state of normality – or some semblance of it – the demands we put on our closets, or, more specifically, the clothes hanging in them, have started to change, too. When the pace of daily life ground to a halt, comfort and practicality became key concerns for many women. However, now that we are looking forward to a new chapter, there’s a palpable sense of optimism in the air – and we want that represented in our clothes as well. This sartorial buoyancy and joy has dominated the collections for a few seasons now, and leading the charge is Australian label Oroton, whose latest covetable offering is a veritable ode to spring.

Creative director Sophie Holt looked to her own fashion heritage when it came to finding inspiration for the elegant yet effortless resort ’22 collection. “I like to stamp each collection with a new artwork or motif; a playful element. For spring, it felt right to turn to nostalgia – garden florals, daisies, poppies, thistles and matchbox prints all evoke strong memories from my childhood, in particular of my grandmother’s curios.” Holt’s grandmother was, of course, Australian fashion entrepreneur and former First Lady Dame Zara Holt. “She collected the most interesting pieces; she had a wonderful style, and I think because of her influence, I am very clear today on what I like and what I don’t. And so, for spring, there is that tribute, and the prints also help to capture a mood that feels lighter and full of possibility.”

This positivity and joy can be keenly felt in every piece of Oroton’s latest collection – whether you’re drawn to the voluminous gowns or playful shift dresses – and speak to Oroton’s own renaissance. The label has a rich history stretching back more than 80 years; however, it’s recently moved in a bold new direction and extended its offering to include a full ready-to-wear collection, and the results are truly sublime. Holt elaborates: “More than ever, we were focused on seeking moments of escapism and looking to the future. There is a sense of energy throughout the range – the idea of spending an afternoon outside in the garden, a taste of slow days ahead, of recharging and how that felt – the collection had to have a feel-good element; a confident spirit.”

Of course, part of this emphasis on looking to the future implies that celebrations – be they weddings, birthday parties or far-flung vacations – are back on the agenda, and while Oroton’s heavenly dresses are underscored by a sense of wearability that makes them a viable option every day, the more dramatic styles promise to come into their own for event-dressing. Add to the bucolic overtones by styling your Oroton gown with an elevated basket bag and roughly hewn gold and pearl jewels.

If this collection represents Oroton’s vision of a brighter future, we can’t wait to see what else the brand has in store for us going forward.
