In the seven years since street-style icon Elin Kling and her husband Karl Lindman founded Totême, the label has quietly become a cult favorite, much loved for its decidedly modern take on closet staples. Worn by stylish tastemakers such as creative director Leia Sfez, brand consultant Lydia Tsegay and model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (eagle-eyed fashion fans will no doubt notice it makes frequent cameos in her #ootd selfies), Totême’s timeless pieces strike the sweet spot between elegant and effortless. Nowhere is the brand’s sartorial mastery and minimal Scandinavian sensibility more evident than in its outerwear. Case in point: Totême’s take on the classic trench coat. Cast in a chic ‘concrete’ hue and cut from a water-repellent cotton blend, it’s the perfect balance of form and function. Consider this lightweight piece the key to tackling tricky trans-seasonal weather and throw it on over everything from blue jeans to trackpants for a faultless daytime look.
Far from an isolated incident, Totême’s ever-increasing success is indicative of a sweeping change within the fashion industry. Over the past few years, faddish trends have given way to a more sustainable approach to both design and building out the perfect closet, with the emphasis shifting from so-called ‘It’ items to forever pieces with year-round appeal. Another label widely known for its understated spin on luxury is, of course, The Row. The New York-based brand, which celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, excels at creating endlessly wearable and universally flattering designs, with oversized tailoring being something of a signature. However, The Row’s Midas touch also extends to accessories. Adding the label’s soft and slouchy leather shoulder bag to your look is a sure-fire way to elevate any outfit.
While London is still in the midst of lockdown, shopping editor Chloe Waller is mindful to invest in pieces that work for right now but will also remain relevant for seasons to come. So, when Tove’s ladylike blouse landed on NET-A-PORTER this week, she was quick to snap it up.
“As most of us are still working from home and ‘dressing from the waist up’, this elegant blouse is a great addition to my spring wardrobe. I love the versatility of it, with the option to tie the silk scarf or leave it loose. I try to buy pieces that work for both day and night, and this blouse definitely fits that brief. I love making an effort with my outfit on a Monday morning to boost my mood and confidence for the week ahead, so for my Zoom calls I would wear this blouse tucked in to relaxed-fit jeans with cozy shearling flats and classic gold hoop earrings.”
