It’s been over a month since the PORTER team first began working remotely. If this time has taught us one thing about our sartorial tendencies, it’s that we can be divided firmly into two camps: those who have embraced off-duty dressing and those who continue to add a little polish to their lockdown look. Standing firmly in the latter camp is fashion director Kay Barron, an ardent aesthete who is more @wfhfits than #dressfromthewaistup. In fact, she’s already lining up suitably ‘extra’ outfits for a time when event dressing is back on the agenda. Which is why, when this head-turning Valentino runway look landed on the site this week, she was swift to purchase it. (And, in case you were wondering, it won’t be hanging in her closet until lockdown is lifted.)
“We may be encouraged to grow up and put away such childish things as a dressing-up box, but in lockdown I have reclaimed the joy of dressing up with nowhere to go,” says Barron. “There is nothing wrong with a bit of fantasy, and also fantasizing about where you are going to wear such beautiful things in the future. Valentino may be designed to be taken out and shown off but, in the meantime, nothing lifts the spirit quite like a feathered T-shirt and a skirt made for swishing. For now, I’ll be taking it for a spin around my living room in flat gladiator sandals and some little gold hoop earrings – but, when we are allowed back out, watch out world, for I’ll be making a flamboyant entrance anywhere and everywhere I go. Apologies in advance.”
