As colder days roll in, instead of lamenting long sunny afternoons, see this season as the perfect opportunity to bring some joy to your day via your closet. There is something instantly uplifting about wrapping up in a luxurious knit, capacious coat, and then accessorizing liberally with sumptuous cashmere scarves and hats that add pops of color.

When it comes to coats, seek out classic styles that will serve you well for multiple seasons. Elegant, quilted styles have been de rigueur for some time now, and have the added benefit of being a wholly timeless style too. Rag & Bone’s quilted beige ‘Rudy’ coat is both pretty and practical: it comes in an enveloping oversized silhouette – perfect for layering over chunky knits – and has ribbed cuffs that will keep the cold out. Better still, it’s crafted from consciously made recycled shell. Style it over the brand’s coordinating cashmere loungewear and retro sneakers for a sophisticated off-duty look.

British brand Marfa Stance – which also has sustainability at its core – proudly produces its seasonless pieces in limited quantities at a family-run factory in Veneto. Founder Georgia Dant focuses on adaptability, creating items that can be personalized to suit your lifestyle. Take its reversible coat – essentially giving you two coats in one – which is made from contrasting panels of plush shearling and water-repellent shell, and it has a removable shearling-trimmed hood for warmer seasons. Another versatile beauty is Yves Salomon’s reversible shearling coat in elegant army-green.

Shearling is, of course, another perennial favorite in the fashion world, making it worth the investment. We love Danish brand Remain Birger Christensen’s take on the look with its toffee-colored style. Dress it down with denim or up with tailoring – the label’s flared rib-knit pants will accentuate the coat’s cool, seventies vibe.

Speaking of classics, every closet needs a perfect trench, and this season Amsterdam-based label Caes has nailed it with its beautifully cut, beige pleated trench. Its clean, minimalist silhouette will look divine over the brand’s loose-fit organic-cotton shirts and faux-leather belted pants. Just add sleek loafers to complete the look and a brightly hued handbag for a pop of color – we love Bottega Veneta’s ‘Mount’ bag in mustard.

For the ultimate in luxury, consider a cardigan-style coat by The Elder Statesman. “Ever since I was a little boy, I [have] always gravitated towards well-made things,” says founder Greg Chait. Decked out in the brand’s plush cashmere sweater, scarf and beanie hat, you’ll no doubt agree this LA-based label is impeccably crafted. Allude offers similar sleek simplicity, with its clean, collarless, cashmere-blend style, perfect for transitioning between seasons. Layer it over the label’s turtleneck midi dress and finish with slouchy suede boots and an elegant hat – Isabel Marant’s bouclé bucket version puts a sophisticated spin on this off-duty staple.

On warmer days, opt for one hero knit, such as Madeleine Thompson’s puff-sleeved ‘Leo’ cardigan. Paired with vintage-style shirting – LoveShackFancy’s scalloped-collared style is ideal – jeans and loafers, it is has an elegant, retro feel. Those with more minimal tastebuds will adore Lisa Yang’s ribbed, longline cashmere sweater. With its sporty zipped collar, it looks super-chic layered over the label’s ribbed cashmere leggings – think effortless elegance and optimum comfort combined.
