Vince launches its Fall 2019 collection
A Spanish-inspired collection with a Californian twist…
When Californian fashion brand Vince used the historic Spanish seaside town of San Sebastian to garner inspiration for Fall, the result was a combination of timeless styling and the rugged beauty of nature.
San Sebastian’s iconic La Concha beach is the kind of European destination you dream of during the dreary days of winter. Yellow sand, crystal-clear sea, parasols peppered up and down in neat rows – so far so typical. But move 500 meters west and the sand evolves into craggy rock, jagged cliff faces and an unexpected sculpture – Peine Del Viento – a collection of three rust-beaten metal structures suspended above the ocean. Designed by Basque artist Eduardo Chillida, they cast dramatic, man-made lines against the contrast of steep cliffs and inky blue water below – creating a striking juxtaposition that inspired Vince's latest collection.
To add a suitably Californian twist to the tale, the brand then decided to shoot its Spanish-inspired collection closer to home, along the rugged coastline of Malibu. The styling of the collection reflects the natural contrasts of the Californian landscape by layering chunky knits with panné velvet slips, for example, while butter-soft cashmere, heritage check flannel, delicate chiffon, tactile velvets and sumptuous coats dictate an ethereal yet strong mood.

Vince also wanted to juxtapose the luxury garments against the cliffs, earth and wet sand, so enlisted handcraft-inspired production techniques to reference traditional quilting and patchwork.
Standout pieces from the collection include a slinky wrap dress in rust-hued velvet. The deep V-neck, midi length and sleeveless style combine to create an elegant piece of eveningwear, but layered over a fine-knit polo neck and woolly tights, you can easily adapt the dress for workwear. It also transcends the seasons, taking you through the warm days and chilly nights of early fall to the depths of winter with the addition of a few basics from your closet.
The hero outfit of the collection has to be a black and cocoa-brown check flannel suit. The pants have a wide, slouchy leg. The jacket is generous in fit, hemmed at the knee with a wide collar and cinched at the waist with a matching tie belt. The campaign pairs the suit with a charcoal cashmere knit, with drawstrings at the neck for a cosy yet refined look, but swap the knit for a crisp, white shirt and the suit transitions to a boardroom winner.
Vince describes the colors of their new collection as an emotional palette inspired by tide pools, seaweed and red rust – and it’s these emotions you can see echoed in the stunning campaign imagery. The turning of seasons can be an uncertain time, but Vince has us diving right in.
