It goes without saying that last year’s party season was, at best, a bit of a non-event. Fast-forward to 2021 and, although holiday parties might look a little different to how they once did – think intimate soirées and candlelit dinners rather than raucous gatherings – they are officially back on the agenda. And so, by extension, is party dressing. However, after such a long hiatus, and with the goal posts constantly changing, it can be difficult to know what tone to strike with your after-dark look.

Of course, the prudent approach is to opt for chic pieces that are both elegant and effortless, which means they’ll slot into your capsule wardrobe, too. Take London-based label Roksanda’s exquisite sleeveless silk top. Complete with a fringed neck scarf, this beautifully draped piece is a showstopper: paired with classic cigarette pants, an heirloom watch and Jimmy Choo’s crystal-embellished pumps, it makes for a timeless evening look; however, you’ll also find yourself reaching for it year-round to elevate everything from blue denim and slip skirts to knitted separates. Similarly, a perfectly cut blazer by cult Belgian designer Ann Demeulemeester is endlessly versatile. Suiting has long been a staple of the brand, and this investment jacket can be shrugged on over virtually every outfit in your arsenal to instantly lend it an air of sophistication.

Then again, if ever there was a time for decadence, it’s the holiday season. If the ritual of getting all dressed up is something that brings you joy, go all out with a flamboyant look. Consider it sartorial serotonin. That’s the approach senior fashion features editor Gillian Brett is taking this season, which is why when a jaw-dropping sequin and feather mini dress by Valentino landed on site this week, she was quick to snap it up.

“Valentino may be known for its signature shade of vermillion, but this season is all about green – so, for creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli, it has to be the most elegant of emerald hues. I was immediately drawn to this silk mini dress by the Italian label for its bold glamour; drenched in sequins, with wispy, feather-trimmed cuffs, this is a dress for having fun in. One of the best things about it is it makes maximum impact with minimum effort, as you can keep accessories pared-back. The perfect finishing touches are pointed heels, a sleek clutch and Spinelli Kilcollin’s gold and emerald stacked ring to offset its vibrant color.”

Whether you’re planning to go maximal or minimal this party season, make sure not to forget the final flourishes. After all, with the celebrations scaled back this season, it’s all about the finer details. A slouchy grab bag from Loewe or Bottega Veneta has room for all your after-dark essentials, while contemporary jewels by sought-after names such as Sophie Bille Brahe and breaking brand By Pariah promise to add personality to your look.
