Discover Tory Burch’s trans-seasonal staples
Inspired by New York, the American designer spotlights the building blocks of modern closets that have enduring appeal
New York label Tory Burch has long-been inspired by all things Americana. Since establishing her brand in 2004, the designer, who trained in art history, has become known for her ability to seamlessly take the essence of American style and render it new each season – from the outdoorsy prairie plains of the Midwest to the preppy feel of the metropolis and the whimsical dresses favored by the country-club set.
And this season is no exception. For FW21, Tory Burch was influenced by the city of New York. Taking this urban lens, the designer proposed pieces for fall that are both polished yet robust and grounded in a natural, everyday reality – think tactile turtlenecks that are designed to be easily layered under billowing midis or crisp shirt dresses, blanket-style outwear with fluid lapels and blouses with elegant poet sleeves. Softness and wearability are key: these garments are designed to be worn everywhere – in the office and outdoors or off-duty days at home. It’s no wonder Tory Burch has become a beloved stalwart of the American fashion landscape.
“These are timeless pieces that are grounded in the reality of how women want to dress,” says the designer of this FW21 collection. “It starts with the idea of seasonless dressing and the foundation of wardrobes that women will reimagine in their own way.”
“This FW21 collection is not just a love letter to New York, but a celebration of clothing and its ability to transcend both seasons and moods
”
A definite, back-to-school mentality informed this collection: silhouettes drew from classic closet staples, but rendered them contemporary with the subtle design flourishes the designer has become known for. Architectural pinafore dresses were juxtaposed when layered over feminine blouses, and replete with statement hardware detail – a sartorial distillation of New York itself, where the stillness of its angular buildings contrast with the hubbub of life on the sidewalks. Prints, too, drew from the city’s neighborhood diversity, from Japanese floral motifs to artisanal Indian block printing.
Inspired by this new era of dress, where wardrobe mileage is fundamental, Burch opted for fail-safe staples in soft fabrications that can be mixed and matched with ease: outerwear, drawing from enduring silhouettes, is crafted from tactile wools and leathers, while tailored pants are rendered in soft moleskins and wools – a chic choice for the office that simultaneously look cool and urban when tucked into cozy socks.
After a summer of breezy fabrics, Burch was reveling in tactility this season. Knits are both lightweight for layering and chunky for warding off autumnal chills; cottons are crisp and reliably sturdy, while corduroys and tweed bring texture. This FW21 collection is not just a love letter to New York, but a celebration of clothing and its ability to transcend both seasons and moods. These are investment pieces you can keep and wear forever – no matter where you’re heading.
