A first look at Etro’s SS20 collection
A new-season collection from the iconic Italian fashion house is a masterclass in bohemian glamour
From 18th-century pioneering pirates such as Anne Bonny to 1960s style icons Anita Pallenberg and Marianne Faithfull, Etro drew its inspirations from both far and wide, past and present for SS20, resulting in an assuredly eclectic, rock’n’roll and bohemian collection. Founded in 1968 by Gerolamo ‘Gimmo’ Etro, and with his daughter Veronica now at the healm, the fashion house has long been renowned for its free-spirited esthetic and signature paisley prints. In keeping with the label’s strong identity, this season sees the introduction of retro-inspired details and motifs from across the globe, as bold prints and embellishments from the favorite hippy destinations of the 1970s – Ibiza, Goa and Tangier – are reimagined on flowing dresses, lightweight cover-ups, pants, knitwear and accessories. Diaphanous sheer fabrics are enriched with colorful embroidery, while suede and leather outerwear is brought to life thanks to patchworks of print and jacquard.
For long-time fans of the label, Etro’s emblematic design codes remain as strong as ever – from beautiful printed maxi dresses, which work just as well with sandals for day as they do with heels for evening, to elevated closet staples, such as loose blouses and luxe jackets. Beyond the irresistible esthetic appeal, the beauty of these new-season pieces lies in their versatility. While the free-flowing silhouettes, lightweight fabrics and joyous colorways are perfect for nomadic adventures in far-flung destinations across the globe, they also work beautifully in the city within a day-to-day closet. From the pastel-striped sweater and paisley-print flares to the patchwork maxi skirt and long-sleeved top, each look can be worn head-to-toe or mixed and matched with pared-back closet essentials for an outfit that’s as subtle or as statement as you like.

Perhaps most notably, SS20 marks a confident return to strong statement prints. The instantly recognizable paisley motif has had a bold update, while the use of a patchwork effect on skirts and blouses brings together clashing patterns to striking effect. The result? Joyous clothes that are as remarkable as the unapologetic women who inspired them.
Of course, no new-season closet would be complete without a few statement accessories to finish your look. Etro’s floppy-brimmed suede hats ensure you will be suitably shaded from the sun, while printed headscarves add glamour and keep you chic in the heat. Finally, tie your look together with one of the season’s showstopping belts – with their intricate buckles, elaborate embroidery and metallic adornments, each style is akin to a market-found treasure collected on dreamy, exotic travels.
