Vacations and getaways might be off the agenda for the foreseeable, but with temperatures rising in London and New York, the PORTER fashion team has been thinking about summer – or, more precisely, upgrading our summer closets. For content director Alice Casely-Hayford, this season’s lightweight tailoring, statement sandals and classic sunglasses are akin to a shot of sartorial sunshine. Which is why, when a pair of long-line shorts by cult designer Simon Porte Jacquemus landed on site this week, she snapped them up instantly.
“Spring has officially sprung, and while I’m staring wistfully at the beautiful blue sky and dreaming of far-flung travels, these vibrant, floral-print Jacquemus shorts bring a little of the outdoors in. Long-line shorts are one of this season’s hero shapes, but for those of us daunted by the prospect of culottes, this pair from the designer’s landmark 10th-anniversary SS20 collection are extremely comfortable – made from linen – and flattering. I’ll be taking a cue from the Jacquemus show’s styling and wearing them with a bright vest tucked in to accentuate the high waist, an unbuttoned shirt or light blazer and sandals. My supermarket ensemble has never looked so good.”
Follow suit and elevate your off-duty look by investing in versatile yet elegant pieces. The Row’s black bandeau shape makes for a faultless summer dress, while Lauren Manoogian’s sumptuous woollen sweater would work just as well worn over a silk slip as it would paired with blue jeans and box-fresh sneakers. Ultimately, adding a few choice accessories is the fastest way to put a new spin on tried and tested outfits (or your new-found quarantine uniform). Isabel Marant’s raffia bucket bag can add an air of wanderlust to any look, while Bottega Veneta’s chunky gold earrings promise to elevate any outfit – even sweats.
