With the weather in London becoming increasingly autumnal, the PORTER fashion team has made its peace with the fact that – in the UK at least – summer is coming to an end. The upshot? We can now turn our full attention towards fall – or, more specifically, preparing and perfecting our FW20 closets. For fashion assistant Annie Hertikova, that means finding pieces that combine practicality with polish, which is why she’s eyeing up Alexander McQueen’s sumptuous knitted coat, which landed on site this week.
“As we say goodbye to summer and the weather becomes a bit more unpredictable, I can’t wait to start wearing cozy sweaters and statement coats. This sculptural knitted version by Alexander McQueen marries the best of both worlds, making it an ideal trans-seasonal piece. Plus, it can also be transformed into a dress by cinching the waist with a statement belt. Alexander McQueen’s designs exude feminine power and sophistication, and therefore need no embellishment. I’ll keep the rest of my look low key by layering it over a minimal slip dress and finishing with barely-there sandals. Once winter hits, I’ll swap in knee-high boots.”
If you’re on the hunt for similarly chic outerwear that transitions effortlessly between seasons, Proenza Schouler’s bright white double-breasted blazer is another fail-safe choice. Layer it over Gabriela Hearst’s structural linen dress to give this summer piece year-round appeal – simply drape it across the shoulders for elegant nonchalance. Or, for a fresh take on winter dressing, pair it with a form-fitting turtleneck, leather shorts and knee-high boots.
The easiest way to give your closet a new-season spin is by investing in accessories that promise to provide the perfect finishing touch to myriad outfits. Bottega Veneta’s padded ‘Cassette’ bags have become a firm favorite with the fashion industry’s most influential figures, and FW20’s yellow iteration is sure to turn heads. Fine jewelry is another way to instantly elevate your look, and Suzanne Kalan’s delicate hoop earrings make a sophisticated addition to any outfit, while Jaeger-LeCoultre’s iconic ‘Reverso’ watch is a bona-fide collector’s item that you’re sure to wear and cherish for years to come.
