Bassike’s Carbon-Neutral Staples Deliver Eco Style With Integrity
Known for its clean, minimalist aesthetic, BASSIKE offers contemporary, consciously crafted forever pieces to wear on repeat
We’ve all become more aware of our impact on the planet in recent years: from travel and food to our homes and our wardrobes, the need to make conscious choices has never felt more important than it does today. That’s why it’s vital to know which brands you can trust when it comes to transparency around production, materials, craftsmanship and more. Thankfully, NET-A-PORTER’s NET SUSTAIN platform was designed to simplify this process, highlighting the brands and products that meet at least one of nine key attributes in the initiative – and Bassike is one sustainable brand to make the cut.
Founded by Deborah Sams and Mary Lou Ryan in Australia in 2006, Bassike (pronounced ‘basic’) was created to supply what they couldn’t find at the time: high-quality, sustainably sourced closet staples using organic cotton, Australian makers, and responsible business practices from start to finish. “Bassike was originally created to fill a void in the market for wardrobe essentials that were made ethically and sustainably from certified-organic cotton,” says Sams, the creative director. Today, this considered, purpose-driven ethos still centers on design-led collections that are made sustainably and ethically.
Indeed, since receiving its Climate Active Carbon Neutral certification as an organization in July, 2021, the brand has announced that its signature organic cotton-jersey product line officially meets the requirements of the Climate Active Carbon Neutral Standard – an impressive milestone in its commitment to reduce and offset its carbon emissions. “Minimizing our impact on the planet has always been central to the Bassike ethos,” says director of sustainability and supply chain, Ryan. “This in-depth certification and review process has resulted in emissions reductions across every step of the organic-jersey production process, from knitting the fabric to cutting and sewing the final garment here in Sydney.”
With a clean, minimalist aesthetic, the brand’s organic cotton-jersey styles are also exceptionally easy to wear and will fit seamlessly into a modern wardrobe. Directional silhouettes and cutout details elevate the collection beyond typical jersey basics, while the versatile palette of black, white and khaki-green means each piece can be styled effortlessly with existing pieces in your closet. Even better, the organic cotton-jersey is supremely comfortable – and highlights in the latest collection include a slouchy T-shirt dress perfect for casual occasions, plus a one-shouldered design that can be styled with flat sandals for day or heels and jewelry for evening. Meanwhile, the cutout T-shirts will provide the perfect update to your usual tee-and-jeans look. In short, consider this collection your go-to for style with integrity.
