My 7 life lessons, with art entrepreneur Marine Tanguy
MARINE TANGUY is an art entrepreneur, media commentator and the founder of MTArt Agency – the first talent agency to represent visual artists across the globe. She is also a mother to her one-year-old son Atlas, and appreciates the power of renewal, a connection to nature and exploring a sense of self. Here, Tanguy showcases the BRUNELLO CUCINELLI pre-fall ’21 collection and shares the life lessons she’s learned
Art can transform the status quo
“I have been so enamored with artists ever since I can remember. There is something incredibly special about seeing them rethink and create bodies of work while also reinventing themselves and growing [to] achieve their hopes and dreams. That is one of the reasons I love to work with creatives: the possibility for completely transforming the status quo – be it through reinventing a place with public art, reinventing a brand in artistic collaborations, or reinventing an idea and providing new ways of looking at it. Reinvention is at the core of creativity, and at the core of what brands, spaces, cities, and our homes need. And there is enormous joy in being able to challenge, rethink and recreate reality.”
Start every day anew
“Being an entrepreneur means that every single day is brand new. Every single day is one to renew, reinvent, challenge. The pandemic is a very clear example of how MTArt Agency was able to reinvent the positioning – the need for and the meaning of public art projects; trying to reach out to as many people as possible and positively influence their days. Daily renewal is at the heart of what I do, be it through the way I communicate with my team, the creative process of designing new projects, being on top of what the emerging artists are doing and supporting new generations as much as possible.”
Find rejuvenation in nature
“In the past year, there has been a reconnection with nature; with its rejuvenating powers [as] a way of escaping the daily barrage of uncertainty. Art and artists have historically found refuge in nature and have been representing it in the most inspiring ways. As a brand, Brunello Cucinelli depicts, in a full sensorial experience, a connection with nature.”
Establish a foundation
“I believe in the power of having a foundation that we can return to and play with. By this, I mean investing in good [fashion] basics that will last a lifetime and, in the arts, investing in timeless and meaningful pieces. And just by changing and rearranging the art on the walls [or] changing how a dress is styled, we are reinventing the reality we are surrounded by. Durability and creativity are two of the most important approaches to a sustainable and natural lifestyle.”
Explore through style
“Not only do I love to invest in timeless pieces that I can return to year after year, but I also love to experiment with more playful pieces that give me a new sense of self and allow me to explore different areas of my personality. In Brunello Cucinelli’s collections, I love the sense of calm, comfort and confidence the brand gives you.”
Seek inspiration from your surroundings
“[Being] born by the sea has had a huge impact on my life. Any decision I [have] had to make, or during difficult periods in my life, I [have found] much comfort in going to the sea and taking inspiration from it. I’m very used to having a natural element to help me put together my thoughts, whether it’s through cycling, walking or looking at something visually inspiring.”
Shift perspective
“When I was younger, I projected this idea of being a very artistic and creative mother and I couldn’t wait to have my kid at the center of the creative world that I am part of. I’m incredibly happy that my son is growing up in such a welcoming and creative environment, getting to see extremely stimulating things and meeting people from such different backgrounds. I’m super-excited for him to be able to absorb this environment, follow his own path and make something interesting of it when he’s older. I vividly remember walking with him through the many public art projects we had in London during the pandemic and realizing that their meaning felt even deeper grounded now that I was a mother.”
