Elevate Your Everyday Look With Amiri’s Remastered Classics
The Los Angeles-based brand’s signature blend of ease, elegance and irreverence has made it a favorite with fashion insiders worldwide – and this season’s offering is the perfect blend of all three
Mike Amiri, the man behind cult label Amiri, had an atypical start in the fashion industry. A Los Angeles native, he first made a name for himself handcrafting unique stage pieces for rock’n’roll icons such as Axl Rose and Steven Tyler. He went on to found his namesake label in 2014, combining his early DIY aesthetic with a distinctly relaxed sensibility to create a line that spoke to fashion insiders who wanted classic pieces with a contemporary edge – supermodel Gigi Hadid is one of the brand’s most loyal fans. But while the label has soared to new heights in recent years, it’s very much indebted to the city of Los Angeles, which not only provides Amiri with a wellspring of inspiration, season after season, but each of the label’s collections is also centered around local manufacturing, with ready-to-wear produced in the Arts District using materials sourced across Italy, France and Japan.
“Amiri is one label that consistently shows that ease, elegance and irreverence can co-exist in a single piece
”
In recent seasons, designers across the board have placed renewed emphasis on the importance of classic pieces and enduring designs that have already stood the test of time. Not only does this chime with society’s growing awareness of the environmental impact of the clothes we wear and consume, but on a more practical level, it also makes getting dressed every day a cinch, as these essential pieces have endless versatility. However, something sometimes missing from this equation is a sense of sartorial excitement and progression, but Amiri is one label that consistently shows that ease, elegance and irreverence can co-exist in a single piece.
For the brand’s latest collection, the designer, who is known for his gender-fluid approach to design, took this approach one step further by using his men’s collection to inform women’s, and vice versa. The idea was to capture a sense of empowerment that transcends the rigidity of gender – and the result is nothing short of sublime.
The experimentation with proportions also extended to the label’s outerwear. A floor-skimming checked fleece coat is a sure-fire way to dial up any look – and elevate whatever you’re wearing underneath. There’s no doubt it’s a statement piece, but somehow it also manages to convey a sense of insouciance. Ultimately, it’s this ‘cool’ factor that really makes Amiri stand out from the crowd, and has the same effect on every woman wearing it…
As ever, Amiri’s denim is a cut above, and the designer has experimented with contrasting colors and materials to put a directional spin on a closet mainstay. In fact, deconstructed design has been a signature for the brand since day one.
Elsewhere, an oversized shirt and wide-leg-jeans co-ord, finished with an indigo wash, speak to the ’90s – a perennial inspiration for designers the world over – but, more specifically, to the hip-hop culture Los Angeles became synonymous with during the decade. Consider this nuanced nod to the subcultures he grew up in Amiri’s modern take on Americana.
