Discover key pieces from the brand beloved by athletes, including Indigenous runner and human-rights activist Jordan Marie Daniel

Fashion

Whether you’re a casual runner or a marathon enthusiast, you’ll likely be familiar with On – a sportswear brand beloved for creating kit that is both high-performance and aesthetically pleasing. Conceived in 2010 by Olivier Bernhard – a three-time world duathlon champion and multiple Ironman winner – and his friends Caspar Coppetti and David Allemann, the brand’s raison d’etre is to revolutionize the sensation of running. And it’s working: while testing the label’s signature responsive CloudTec® cushioning, runners described the prototypes as like “running on clouds”.

Twelve years since its founding, On is favored by athletes from around the globe, including Jordan Marie Daniel – a fourth-generation Indigenous runner, human-rights activist and a passionate On ambassador. “I was 10 years old when I went on my first run; it was with my grandfather. I’m 33 now and I never stopped,” Daniel explains. “Running is rooted in Indigenous culture – it’s an important part of our traditions and ceremonies.”

In 2019, Daniel brought awareness to the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women movement when she ran the Boston Marathon with a red handprint painted over her mouth to represent the women silenced by violence, and the letters MMIW painted on her body. She is also the founder of Rising Hearts, an organisation committed to elevating Indigenous voices and promoting climate, racial, social, and economic justice.

“Running has taken on so many different shapes and forms in my life. I’ve found so much joy and purpose in it; it’s been a way to connect with my heritage, to learn. It’s grown communities and opened conversations. Running will first and foremost always be a means for advocacy, but as I keep going, I have a real, serene love and passion for just running for me, too.”

The ultimate running kit

When it comes to running kit, On has you covered from head to toe. Those with lofty running ambitions will love the label’s technical pieces, including the ‘Climate’ shirt, which is ideal for inclement weather conditions thanks to its moisture-absorbing, fast-drying fabric. Made from 100 percent recycled polyester, it even boasts clever thumb and watch holes that allow you to check your smartwatch stats without rolling back your sleeve. Pair with the panelled stretch leggings – made from a recycled, stretchy material that features a flexible compression fit and ribbed panels for extra warmth and protection – and you have the ideal long-run look. Simply slip your phone or keys into the concealed pockets on the waistband and lace up a pair of the ‘Cloudflyer’ color-block mesh trainers before hitting the road. Also good: the sneakers have an in-bulit Helion™ superfoam midsole, which delivers a soft, responsive landing and energy return that makes them perfect for running on myriad terrains.

Wear-anywhere activewear

Many runners complement their training with strength and conditioning exercises. For days when you’re lifting weights, one of On’s organic cotton crew-neck tops and cropped leggings make for a comfortable yet cool gym look. Complete with a pair of the ‘Cloud’ trainers – a brilliant all-round sneaker with a lightweight feel and minimalist design that will take you beyond the gym floor.

Travel in comfort and style

If you’re off on an expedition, or coveting a sporty, off-duty style, separates such as the ‘Explorer’ jacket and pants are practical and directional. Cast in a pretty icy-blue hue, with a contrasting zip and discreet logo, these are chic, understated pieces that are water repellent, too. Pair them with the ‘Cloudaway’ low tops for optimum comfort, whether you’re strolling the city streets or off on a hike.
