When it comes to signature pieces, few designs are more symbolic of a fashion house than the classic blazer is of Parisian maison Saint Laurent. First debuted by the label’s eponymous founder in 1966, this tuxedo-inspired piece, referred to as ‘Le Smoking’, was an instant sensation. It was almost a decade later, in 1975, that revered fashion photographer Helmut Newton photographed a decidedly androgynous model wearing Le Smoking in the hazy streets of Paris – and turned the designer into a household name. This iconic image also did much to cement the blazer’s status as a defining addition to women’s wardrobes, by showcasing a new, exciting and modern form of sartorial sensuality – one that was markedly different from the overt femininity that came before it.

Now a bona-fide closet essential, the blazer is prized for its versatility, polish and practicality. And, while many more designers have turned their hand to this must-have piece, Saint Laurent’s precision-cut tailoring remains the gold standard. For SS21, Anthony Vaccarello, the house’s long-standing creative director, has given this trusted piece an update by recasting it in an optimistic and uplifting lemon hue. More eye-catching than the original black version, yet just as wearable, this bright blazer will instantly elevate blue denim and casual summer dresses – or provide the perfect complement to oversized suiting and luxe leather separates.

Of course, mood-boosting fashion means different things to different people. For shopping assistant Annie Hertikova, no piece is more enchanting than a chic dress – which is why, when Isabel Marant’s ‘Berni’ design dropped on NET-A-PORTER this week, she was quick to snap it up.

“This pastel dress by Isabel Marant has got me so excited for brighter days ahead. I love the ’80s-style silhouette, elegant drapery and playful paisley print, making it perfect for everything from a day in the office (albeit a foreign concept right now) to those much-anticipated summer parties – and maybe even a vacation in the not-so-distant future. I will be styling it with barely-there sandals, gold jewelry and, hopefully, sun-kissed skin.”

Of course, no outfit is complete without a considered selection of accessories. Add an air of timeless glamour to your look by finishing it with Gucci’s cat-eye sunglasses or Jaeger-LeCoultre’s singular ‘Reverso’ watch – opt for a diamond-studded, rose-gold bezel and this watch will be the only embellishment you need. If it’s an of-the-moment piece you’re after, look no further than Bottega Veneta’s in-demand designs. Whether you’re drawn towards the brand’s padded ‘Cassette’ bag or raffia mules, you’re sure to be fielding compliments from all directions.
