It’s no secret that the shirt has undergone a contemporary renaissance. Once the sartorial uniform of boardrooms, it’s now just as likely to be sported off duty – such is the easy-wearing nature of today’s shirting that its mood is more chic and cool than corporate, and the feeling it emanates is altogether more relaxed.

Indeed, much of the shirt’s modern makeover is down to the fresh approach designers are taking when it comes to color, fabrics and cut. Crisp cotton shirts feel equally relaxed when rendered in oversized silhouettes, while silken iterations lend a day-to-dusk feel when crafted in technicolor.

Case in point: Valentino’s supple silk shirt in this season’s must-wear emerald green. With an elongated, A-line silhouette that affords it maximum wardrobe versatility – it can double up as a mini dress – and a polo shirt-style collar that offers it an additional ease, this lustrous shirt is a standout style for the summer months.

That’s why it topped the wish list of junior shopping editor Viktorija Tomasevic this month. “Vibrant green hues were everywhere in the spring/summer collections, and it felt bold and fresh,” she says. “The timeless design and oversized cut of this Valentino shirt ticks all the right boxes and ensures you’ll want to wear it season after season.”

Tomasevic suggests taking styling cues from the runway and pairing it with shorts and gold jewelry on balmy days. And until the mercury climbs? “Wear it with tailored pants and flats when it’s still chilly outside,” she says. Rich, earthy tones provide the perfect palate for striking-green hues: Givenchy’s neutral pants, Saint Laurent’s peep-toe mules and Chloé’s camel-colored satchel are just the ticket.

This palate works well in more understated pairings, too – Victoria Beckham’s silky midi in a rich chocolate hue is ideal offset by statement green heels from By Far. However you choose to wear this saturated shade, it’s sure to add a seasonal spin to your everyday look.
