Jean Genie: Mother Releases Its Spirited, Bowie-Inspired Spring Collection

Ziggy Stardust’s electric and theatrical styling provided the world with some of the most iconic images in popular culture. And now, LA denim brand Mother is paying tribute to David Bowie with a spring collection that explores the legend’s rebellious and playful attitude

Fashion

David Bowie’s influence on fashion has been monumental, and he was revolutionary in the way he used clothes as an extension of his music. His legendary lyrics are considered poetry, but he also used styling as another way to tell a story – and to explore the idea of identity. Bowie crafted distinctive personas and, in the ’70s, he introduced his fans to his glittering alter ego, Ziggy Stardust. Bowie showed the world how clothes and beauty can be used as an act of self-discovery, and Ziggy Stardust remains one of the most enduring images in popular culture to this day, thanks to his flame-red hair, shaved eyebrows, glittery eyeshadow, stacked platforms and sequin jumpsuits.

It’s no surprise then that, 50 years later, the electric imagery from that era is still inspiring creatives and fans around the world today. And why LA-based denim brand Mother’s spring collection pays homage to this chapter in music history, and has been so inspired by Bowie’s rebellious and theatrical approach to styling. Mother’s design team studied every small detail that went into the Ziggy Stardust persona, to make sure each piece captures the spirit of Bowie’s tour between 1972 and 1973.

Jeans are given a glam Bowie makeover, featuring a metallic script of ‘The Jean Genie’ and tiny gold star embellishments

The hero piece of the collection is obviously a pair of fabulous flared jeans, a signature for Mother – and a silhouette that was favored by Ziggy Stardust. These jeans are given a glam Bowie makeover, featuring a metallic script of The Jean Genie and tiny gold star embellishments. The T-shirts are all made to look like original vintage concert tees that fans would collect, using glittery fonts and graphics, and listing some of Bowie’s most iconic songs.

“As a brand rooted in the experiences of growing up in the ’70s, the opportunity to design with the imagery and iconography of The Ziggy Stardust era felt like a full-circle moment,” shared Tim Kaeding, creative director and co-founder of Mother. “With this collection, Bowie’s quintessential sense of glam shines through – all with Mother’s signature touch.”
