Why Et Ochs Is The Go-To Brand For Elegant and Showstopping Eveningwear
Yes, this ’90s-inspired collection of glorious gowns definitely has the Kate Moss wow factor…
When it comes to eveningwear, New York-based Et Ochs is a powerful player with a very clear aesthetic rooted in expert tailoring and clean lines. After a few years during which many of us have been wearing comfortable, oversized clothing, there has been an overall shift towards body-skimming silhouettes with playful cut-outs and sculptural forms. The ‘sexy dress’ is back – and more fabulous and attention-grabbing than ever. Et Ochs is all about playing with form and silhouette, and so the spring collection naturally embraces this trend with playful cut-outs, artfully placed spaghetti straps and plunging necklines. However, in typical Et Ochs fashion, this revealing styling is done in a truly effortless and elegant way.
For her spring collection, Michelle Ochs was inspired by the poet Emily Dickinson. However, rather than her poems, it was Dickinson’s Herbarium, which she assembled as a young woman, that the designer studied. This precious book includes 424 pressed flowers, all of which are delicately and thoughtfully arranged, like a beautiful poetry anthology, using nature instead of words.
“These ruffled and exaggerated seams also give a sartorial nod to the slinky slip dresses of the ’90s
”
The collection’s exquisite color palette is as refined as the nature that inspired the designs, featuring elegant evening dresses in whites and greens and reds. And those with an eye for detail will notice that the seams on the dresses are intentionally twisted, and that the hems are stretched, which was a deliberate move by the design team, to mirror the way that lettuce leaves curl naturally. These ruffled and exaggerated seams also give a sartorial nod to the slinky slip dresses of the ’90s.
“These extra details all add to the overall ’90s feel, making it look like something Kate Moss would have thrown on for a cool fashion-week party
”
When it comes to Et Och’s slinky spring collection, there are a couple of dresses that really stand out – the fern-green slip dress in particular. From the back, it looks like a classic maxi slip dress; however, at the front, it has a cut-out detail at the bust, a thigh-high split, and fabric that ripples towards a center seam. These extra details all add to the overall ’90s feel, making it look like something Kate Moss would have thrown on for a cool fashion-week party. Other notable dresses in the collection are the ‘Melody’ gown and ‘Laela’ dress, which are both an eye-catching white and have an orchid in nickel-free gold on the chest – another nod to Dickinson’s collection of flowers. The evening gown is particularly powerful thanks to the strong shoulder pads and gathered fabric over the hip, while the midi dress version has a more revealing shape with a beautiful halterneck and cut-outs at the waist. All you need now is an invitation that is just as fabulous as these beautiful dresses.
