The Spring/Summer ’27 Trend Report
A sense of lightness and joy was felt across the spring/summer ’27 collections, with designers delivering an eclectic mix of colors, textures and silhouettes that offer the opportunity for plenty of self-expression, says COLLEEN ROSS. Here, we round up the key runway looks to know for the season ahead – and how to recreate them now…
“This season was less about a specific mood or trend and more about personal style,” says NET-A-PORTER’s chief buying and merchandising officer, Brigitte Chartrand, of the spring/summer ’27 collections. “We saw lots of special, exuberant pieces styled in a very wearable way, including at Dries Van Noten, where rugby polos and striped T-shirts were styled with elaborately embellished skirts and jackets – and at Gucci and Valentino, too,” she adds. “It was a reminder that you don’t have to wear statement pieces from head to toe. That really resonated with me as it’s how I like to dress, and I think it will for our customers, too.” Read on for the key spring/summer trends to know and how to wear them now…
Fringe benefits
Tactile fringing swept the runways this season, bringing movement and lightness to skirts, dresses and accessories. In New York, Heirlome’s Stephanie Suberville took an artisanal approach to the trend, applying fringed appliqués and tasseled trims to several looks, in collaboration with Mexican artist Maricarmen Jiménez. Over in Milan, Bottega Veneta creative director Louise Trotter added fringing to sash belts, knitwear and bags, as well as three show-stopping looks (two skirts, one dress) each engineered into elliptical shapes, so they appeared to bounce with every step. Elsewhere, Valentino Garavani and Conner Ives channeled Art Deco glamour, applying colorful fringing to lace skirts, kimonos and chinoiserie-style dresses. Get ahead of the trend with Bode’s burlesque-inspired ‘Sundance’ skirt, styling yours with a crisp white shirt and heels for an evening out. Alternatively, try Alix of Bohemia’s fringed ‘Sonia’ top with jeans and ballet flats for a relaxed weekend look.

Costume drama
Designers often look to the past for inspiration, but references to historical dress felt particularly pertinent this season. With two new Jane Austen adaptations (Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice) hitting movie and TV screens this year, it was only a matter of time before the Regency era found its way back to the new-season runways. Acne Studios’ Jonny Johansson held court in Paris with a collection that juxtaposed 18th-century-inspired frock coats, corseted puffball dresses and buckled satin slippers with contemporary streetwear for a cool contrast. Over in New York, Khaite’s Catherine Holstein borrowed elements of vintage underpinnings, spanning Victorian crinolines and 1940s slips. And in London, Erdem Moralıoğlu cited 1920s trapeze artist Barbette, with dropped-waist robe de style dresses, feather-trimmed boudoir coats and crystal-embellished playsuits. Comme des Garçons’ gathered balloon skirt and Pauline Dujancourt’s puff-sleeved ‘Lauren’ jacket are both effortlessly elegant ways to channel the look now.

Laid bare
Brace yourselves, because brands are daring us to bare next season. Khaite, Tom Ford and Etro all made a case for bras as tops, while MM6 Maison Margiela played a game of ‘reveal and conceal’, underpinning daringly low-cut dresses with pretty lace-trimmed bralettes. At Valentino Garavani, Alessandro Michele opened the show with a series of jewel-toned sweetheart corsets that framed the decolletage. Meanwhile, Erdem went full showgirl, with crystal-embellished bras and playsuits; and Magda Butrym, Simone Rocha and Loewe all replaced pants with high-waisted briefs. But it wasn’t just underwear that turned heads on the runways – alluringly sheer dresses stole the show at Gucci, McQueen and Valentino Garavani. Underpin a sheer top with Khaite’s ‘Talita’ bralette for parties this fall; or try Tom Ford’s lace mini dress layered over a tonal slip and jeans.

Show-stopping skirts
Skirts ruled the runways across all four cities. You could call it the Miuccia Prada effect (the legendary designer is famously skirt-obsessed and showed an entire collection of skirts this season), with fellow designers serving up an array of brilliantly bold, statement-making styles to see you through every occasion come spring. Dries Van Noten covered all bases with styles ranging from bejeweled cloque to delicate floral-print chiffon; and Valentino Garavani favored pencil skirts in leather, taffeta, plisse and lace. Elsewhere, Anthony Vaccarello marked the end of his tenure at Saint Laurent with a series of shimmering gold styles that are sure to become true collector items. Let them inspire your fall/winter wardrobe by wearing Jil Sander’s floral-print midi skirt with a cashmere sweater to the office – and Dolce&Gabbana’s sequined tulle style with a lace camisole in the evening.

A touch of tuxedo
Cummerbunds started to crop up in collections last season, and have been a hit on the street-style circuit ever since – so it wasn’t too much of a surprise to see them reappear on the spring/summer ’27 runways. However, what was unexpected this time around was how they were styled. While Heirlome and Kallmeyer took a more traditional approach by pairing theirs with tailoring, the overall look felt looser and more relaxed. It was a feeling echoed at Ralph Lauren Collection, too, who opted for beaded sash-like styles that sat just above the hips. Elevate day and evening looks with Le Sundial’s tasseled ‘Vesper’ belt or team Valentino Garavani’s yellow plissé style with light-wash denim and an oversized blazer.

Lace expectations
From doily-inspired crochets and broderie anglaise to delicate heirloom lace, intricate needlework was used to convey a romantic, bohemian mood. Lace-trimmed shawls were draped over trench coats and manipulated into tops at The Row; while, at Chloé, dresses either came in scalloped broderie anglaise or trimmed with delicate lingerie lace. Newcomer Pauline Dujancourt sent a procession of ethereal looks crafted from different types of lace down the runway in London – her finale look alone was assembled from 700 individually knitted flowers, each pieced and linked together by hand. The theme continued at Khaite, Magda Butrym, Dolce&Gabbana and Isabel Marant – all arriving in heavenly shades of white, ivory and cream. Make the trend work for fall by pairing Chloé’s delicate lace blouse with a cashmere knit and ankle boots.

Fancy footwork
Maximalists and magpies rejoice! Shoes just got a serious upgrade for spring/summer ’27. Whether topped with rosettes (Dolce&Gabbana, Valentino Garavani) and jeweled cabochons (Saint Laurent) or embellished with scores of whimsical charms (Loewe) and beads (Dries Van Noten), next season’s footwear is made to be noticed. Channel the show-styling at Loewe by wearing Gianvito Rossi feather-embellished sandals with a pair of colorful tights – or Manolo Blahnik’s ‘Nadira’ pumps with ankle socks à la Dolce&Gabbana.

Practical matters
We all know the weather can be unpredictable, but thankfully designers have us covered next season. Practical outerwear – from shell windbreakers and PVC raincoats to parachute jackets – emerged as the unexpected layer of choice, thrown over both day and evening looks. Naturally the trend kicked off in London – where the weather is always a hot topic of conversation – with Simone Rocha, Erdem and Burberry leading the way, before carrying on right through to Paris at Loewe, Chloé and Victoria Beckham. As for right now, Tom Ford’s TPU coat is a genius way to stay protected from the elements without concealing your outfit underneath; while Loewe’s layered hooded shell jacket will look as chic paired with a lace-trimmed slip dress as it does with casual separates.

A drop in the ocean
Several designers including Dolce&Gabbana, Stella McCartney and Simone Rocha looked to the depths of the ocean for inspiration – reinforcing the underwater theme that first began to emerge at the couture shows in July. Alongside scores of coral bead embellishments and whimsical shell accessories were various shades of ocean blue – with glimmers of vibrant turquoise, aquamarine, azure and seafoam appearing either from top to toe or as an impactful accent. Memorable looks came from Aaron Esh, Calvin Klein Collection and Fforme, where floor-length dresses with a liquid-like drape rippled like water as they made their way down the runway. Replicate the look at your next event with Aflalo’s ‘Celestia’ cobalt plissé-satin maxi dress and Tohum’s ‘Evil Eye’ shell necklace.
