Incredible Women of 2025: The Sports Stars
All through March, to mark Women’s History Month and begin NET-A-PORTER’s 25th-anniversary celebrations, we have been honoring our Incredible Women of 2025. Here, we spotlight five game changers in sports – athletes whose talent, resilience and phenomenal achievements are inspiring the world. By VICTORIA NEWTON-SYMS
Coco Gauff
“Seeing so much success and excitement in and around women’s sport has inspired me – and knowing that my hard work can open doors for others motivates me to keep pushing,” Coco Gauff tells PORTER. At just 21, the Grand Slam champion has already cemented her place as one of the most electrifying players in tennis. Since her breakthrough at Wimbledon in 2019, Gauff has continued to captivate audiences with her speed, power and fearless mentality.
Off the court, she is just as impactful. A vocal advocate for social justice, Gauff has spoken out on racial equality, donated $100,000 to UNCF, which funds scholarships for Black students, and uses her growing influence to push for positive change in women’s sports. Whether dominating on the court or inspiring off it, Gauff is shaping the future for the next generation.
Maia Bouchier
“I very much see it as my role to inspire more young girls to play the game,” says cricketer Maia Bouchier – and that’s exactly what she’s been doing with her standout performances. A key player for England, Bouchier has made a significant impact on the team’s success. But her influence extends further.
A passionate advocate for sustainability, she is using her platform to push for change within cricket, including calling for more environmentally friendly kits. This is a cause she’s eager to continue championing in the year ahead. “My hope for 2025 is that people keep taking an interest in sustainability,” she says. “I’ve really enjoyed learning about it over the last couple of years – and how I can be active within my sector – using my voice and my platform to encourage people to follow a more sustainable path.”
A’ja Wilson
A three-time MVP, A’ja Wilson has taken basketball by storm, establishing herself as one of the most dominant players in the WNBA. Known for her versatility, athleticism and leadership, Wilson excels both offensively and defensively, making her a force to be reckoned with on the court. She led the Las Vegas Aces to back-to-back WNBA championships in 2022 and 2023, proving her ability to shine in high-pressure moments.
Off the court, Wilson is dedicated to making a difference. She founded the A’ja Wilson Foundation to support children and families affected by dyslexia, advocating for inclusivity and mentorship in education. She also uses her platform to promote equity in women’s sports and inspire the next generation of athletes. With her relentless drive and commitment to both the game and her community, Wilson is a shining example within the world of basketball and beyond.
Eileen Gu
Freestyle skier Eileen Gu is renowned for shattering records and expectations with every competition. A two-time Olympic gold medallist and the first freestyle skier to win three medals at a single Winter Games, she has dominated the sport with her groundbreaking tricks and fearless execution – and become one of the most influential figures in winter sports.
Beyond her athletic achievements, Gu is a trailblazer in multiple arenas, using her platform to bridge cultures, inspire young athletes and advocate for greater representation in sports. She has balanced her skiing career with studying at Stanford University, while securing major brand partnerships at the same time. Whether pushing the limits of freestyle skiing or breaking barriers as a role model, Gu is undoubtedly set for an even brighter future.
Lauren James
Lauren James is redefining what it means to be a modern footballer – and she’s determined to succeed at the highest level. A key player for both Chelsea and the England Lionesses, her technical brilliance and attacking instinct have made her one of the most exciting talents in the game. Whether weaving past defenders or delivering match-winning performances, James continues to push the boundaries of her potential.
For her, success is about constant growth, something that she is looking forward to “continuing to try and improve both on and off the pitch. I just want to keep winning with my club and my country, so doing everything I can to contribute to that is my inspiration,” she says. She also credits her family as a driving force in her journey. “Family is really important to me. They continue to give me hope and continue to push me forward in my game and as a person.”
