How art – and you – can help save the seas

Pop-art legend ED RUSCHA has designed an incredible, sustainably made surfboard for ocean activists Parley – and you could own it

Contemporary art, thoughtful design and a message worth spreading: when all three collide, it’s a thing worth making some noise about. Enter the eco-surfboard: a limited-edition board customized by contemporary artist Ed Ruscha for Parley for the Oceans. The board – one of a limited edition of twenty – is being auctioned this week to coincide with a celebratory gala in New York marking the PORTER x Parley partnership.

Signed by the artist and stamped with the words “The amazing earth”, the surfboard is inspired by Ruscha’s 1984 painting of the same name and constructed from sustainably sourced wood, reducing foam, resin and fiberglass use. All proceeds from the two-week silent auction, which opens on June 7 at 12pm ET and closes on June 14 at 5pm ET, will help to fund Parley’s efforts to protect our planet’s most important ecosystem and address the terrible impact of plastic pollution on the seas.

It’s not the first time environmental game changer Parley has harnessed the power of art to shout its message loudly. New York-born artist and film director Julian Schnabel designed its logo, and last year it collaborated with artist Doug Aitken to create a mesmerizing underwater installation in California, capturing the beauty of the oceans and making a compelling illustration of why we need to save them.
