Trending Now: Corduroy
According to fashion month’s best-dressed, corduroy is back. Imbued with an effortlessly cool ’70s feel, it brings a rich, tactile edge to seasonal wardrobe staples and has emerged as one of fall’s standout trends, says COLLEEN ROSS. Keen to tap into the trend? Read on for the plushest jackets and pants to add to your fall/winter wardrobe
Although corduroy’s history stretches back centuries, it’s impossible to talk about the fabric and not mention the 1970s. This was the decade when its popularity soared, with corduroy pants becoming a style of choice not just for college professors and academics, but also for actors, musicians and feminist icons such as Jane Birkin and Gloria Steinem, who made them part of their own everyday uniform – and much cooler as a result. Princess Diana and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy helped keep corduroy in the spotlight throughout the ’80s and ’90s, but it hasn’t had quite the same impact on our wardrobes since. That is, until fall/winter ’26, when brands including Loewe, Auralee, Gabriela Hearst and Tory Burch put the velvety, ribbed fabric firmly back on the map, doing so in a way that feels right for now.
The corduroy coats to covet
Perhaps the easiest way to incorporate corduroy into your wardrobe is via a coat or jacket. In much the same way as leather or suede, it adds instant cool points to an outfit yet requires little effort to style. For a more casual take, reach for Loewe’s ‘Balloon’ jacket – designed in a classic trucker shape with a gathered hem – pairing it with matching corduroy pants and a color-pop shirt. Alternatively, emulate Sienna Miller’s chic fall look by wearing Gabriela Hearst’s exquisite ‘Houstt’ coat over a checked skirt and block-heeled boots for a more polished take.

The perfect corduroy pants
Although styles being inspired by the ’70s is no bad thing, this season’s cords feel particularly fresh, arriving in relaxed, slouchy shapes and an array of colors. On the runways, Tory Burch took inspiration from corduroy pants in her own father’s wardrobe, recreating them in apricot and saffron hues, while Auralee opted for cobalt and bright-blue. Elsewhere, Loewe’s version felt the closest to vintage styles in terms of color, but had a fuzzy, teddy-bear texture that brought them bang up to date. The beauty of corduroy pants is that they are as easy to style as jeans, so you can wear them interchangeably with all your favorite staples. Róhe's wide-leg ‘Bruun’ cords, for instance, come in plush burgundy and look ultra-chic paired with oversized leather jackets and tees; while Guest in Residence’s ‘Weekender’ style works perfectly with striped knits and checked shirts alike.
