Sofia Sanchez de Betak’s Argentina

On board the historic Modesta Victoria ship , sailing across Lake Nahuel Huapi

The art director and creative consultant explains why, despite her homes in New York and Paris, her heart remains in Argentina. Here, she shares the eternal charms of her birthplace

Lifestyle

For a great escape

“When I want to get away from it all, I sail around Patagonia. Lake Nahuel Huapi is incredibly special to me as it’s where I got married to events producer Alexandre de Betak in 2015. The best way to explore the area is onboard the beautifully restored ‘Modesta Victoria’ ship.”

For an inspiring journey

“The best way to see Argentina is to drive along Route 40 – it crosses the country from the north to the south, taking you across 20 national parks and through the Andes. You see how diverse the landscape is; from arid deserts to lush green vineyards and picture-perfect blue lakes, to the rolling yellow-brown grasslands of the Patagonian steppes. My mother, Maita Barrenechea, runs the luxury specialist travel company, Mai10; they design great bespoke itineraries and off-grid experiences around Argentina.”

The Alvear Palace in La Recoleta, one of Buenos Aires’ most affluent districts

For a chic sleep

The Alvear Palace is Buenos Aires’ landmark hotel and is adored by locals for its grand Lobby Bar and winter garden – it’s the place to go for breakfast. The rooftop suites come with their own terraces for the best views across the city. For a more laid-back vibe, stay at Jardín Escondido, which is Francis Ford Coppola’s House in Buenos Aires, and is an oasis in the heart of Palermo Soho.”

For a stylish bite

“I love the restaurant scene in Buenos Aires, particularly the hangout Proper. This is the best place for Argentine classics like halloumi provoleta (typical grilled provolone that is a staple in Argentina) with pickled dates, plus the dulce de leche flan is to die for. For something more low-key, try La Brigada steakhouse: book a table in the small original room and order bife de chorizo.”

OPEN SPACES
The creative director’s happy place is Nahuel Huapi National Park, where her family own a ranch

For a piece of paradise

“I am happiest at Estancia Arroyo Verde – a beautiful fishing and hunting lodge which my family owns in the Nahuel Huapi National Park. I miss the ‘gaucho’ way of life; riding through endless pampas, gazing at huge horizons, and sitting around a smoldering fire pit for a starlit Argentine asado barbecue.”

For a night out

“Join locals of all ages at a milonga, and dance the tango until the sun comes up. My favorite in Buenos Aires is at La Catedral, which has a great, convivial atmosphere; otherwise the Glorieta de Belgrano is magical as the tango is danced outdoors in a lovely band stand.”
