With every fashion season comes a new set of colors that will define the months ahead. From the vibrant pops of red and cobalt-blue that every fashion editor has been obsessing over, to the very specific shade of gray that appeared on the spring/summer ’26 runways at Bottega Veneta, Alaïa and Stella McCartney, trend-driven hues continue to shape the fashion conversation. However, in an era where we are leaning into our personal style more, women are increasingly looking to color analysis to find the shades that not only feel current but genuinely complement their natural features.

A process that first became popular in the ’80s, color analysis is the theory that everyone has a shade on the color wheel that suits them more than others. Often called your ‘season’, the idea is to pinpoint, for example, whether you’re Spring or an Autumn (warm undertones) or a Summer or Winter (cool undertones). This can then be further broken down into the 12 different sub-seasons – for instance, you might be a Bright Spring, who looks best in vibrant citrus shades; or a True Autumn, who suits rich and earthy hues.

If you are considering getting your hues analyzed, Carol Brailey, a color analyst with over 320,000 followers on TikTok, recommends clearing the mind ahead of your appointment. “Most people are extremely surprised once they find out what their best colors are, because usually it’s not what they were expecting.” She adds that there’s no prescription when it comes to how you take the lessons on board. “Move at your own pace. I’ve met people who have had their colors done and got rid of everything in their closet the next day, but I’ve also had people who decided to just buy new things in their colors going forward.”

While some will opt to see an expert to determine their season, it is possible to figure out for yourself, thanks to TikTok. Simply put your face in the center of various color-wheel filters (without makeup and with your hair pulled back) to compare swatches. Whichever one makes your complexion glow the most is the palette for you. However, you choose to identify them, there are a few expert tips on how to make your season colors pop…

Bright Spring

Key colors: lime green, teal, chartreuse, fuchsia

Zesty shades, like the apple-green of Emma Stone’s slinky coord or the vibrant-yellow blooms of Alaïa’s jersey maxi dress, are perfect if you’re a Bright Spring. They work well styled together, too, as Brailey explains. “The colors in your palette, because they’re all in the same undertone value and intensive range, easily mix and match. It really transforms your relationship with your wardrobe,” she says. Clean lines and graphic shapes will let these colors take center stage, so try pairing your favorite pieces with a sculptural heel (Christen’s ‘Edge T-Strap’ thong sandals are an editor favorite) or Thistles’ oversized ‘The Lex’ sunglasses.

Light Summer

Key colors: sky blue, lemon yellow, pastel pink, lilac

If you discover you’re a Light Summer, it’s time to get acquainted with icy pastels that complement your cool-toned complexion, such as lilac, ice-blue, mint and rose-pink. However, if the season’s palette is a little too sweet for your liking, don’t panic because there are ways to add a little edge. The pale-mint hue of Khaite’s ruched ‘Inara’ camisole, for instance, works perfectly with slouchy white denim; while Gucci’s mini skirt in light-pink silk looks great styled with a simple tee and an oversized leather jacket. As for accessories, beige and soft cream are a natural pairing with pastel shades, making MM6’s ballet flats and The Row’s ‘Georgica’ tote a no-brainer for your new wardrobe.

True Autumn

Key colors: sage green, rose pink, ochre, plum

Writer and editor Laura Jordan, who had her color analysis back in 2024, discovered she was a True Autumn, who suits a warm, earthy palette. Although she didn’t know her season before, she found that some of the shades she already liked chimed with her prescribed palette, proving that instinct is often at play when it comes to color. “There was a specific peachy-pink in my season,” she says. “I was already inexplicably – or not so, it turned out – drawn to it and owned a couple of pieces in that color.” The chances are, you also have a few True Autumn shades in your closet, but if you’ve yet to try the the light dusty green of Chloé’s balloon pants or the rose tone of Loewe’s aviators, then now is your chance. Plus, they work beautifully with dark, inky browns, such as Alaïa's cropped suede biker jacket – a hero piece you’ll buy now and wear forever.

Bright Winter

Key colors: cherry red, cobalt blue, Kelly green, canary yellow

Good news if you’re a Bright Winter – because the primary pop-art style shades that suit you best are big this season. You could wear every look from Loewe’s entire spring/summer ’26 collection, for example, as well as this bright-red jacket from the brand’s pre-fall line-up. Bottega Veneta’s bright-green intrecciato leather pouch is a great way to ease yourself in if you’re new to wearing brighter colors and goes with almost everything. Simply balance your favorite Bright Winter pieces with pared-back wardrobe staples, such as Victoria Beckham’s classic blue jeans or Khaite’s sleek black heels.

Whatever your season, there’s no doubt that dressing according to your color-analysis palette is becoming more straightforward. Jordan believes that living in a world where we’re spoilt for choice has led to this strand of personal styling’s new popularity: “When we’re completely overwhelmed by so many options, anything that gives you a moment’s pause to really think about what you’re buying is a good thing.”
